Chelsea returned to winning ways with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Southampton at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Here’s how Thomas Tuchel’s side rated...

Edouard Mendy 6

Given little to do, other than the penalty.

Trevoh Chalobah 8

He keeps on impressing. To think he was heading out on loan this season up until the final days of the window. Three starts – two goals.

Thiago Silva 8

Largely reduced Southampton to shooting from distance with his expert marshalling of Chelsea’s defence.

Toni Rudiger 7

Took the opportunity to charge forward when invited. His reverse pass for Lukaku was an assist worthy of a No10 – but the offside flag ruled out the goal.

Cesar Azpilicueta 7

Provided good support on the right to overload Southampton at times. Perfectly-weighted cross for Werner’s strike.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek 7

So classy on the ball. This was only his second Premier League start for Chelsea in more than a year. Needs more opportunities.

Mateo Kovacic 6

Carried the ball well and forced Southampton to run towards their own goal with his forward passes.

Ben Chilwell 7

Guilty of bringing down Livramento for Southampton’s penalty – but made up for it with Chelsea’s third goal.

Callum Hudson-Odoi 6

His directness is the sort of thing Chelsea have lacked of late. Always looking to get the ball in the box. Perfect cross provided Werner with a goal that was harshly ruled out by VAR.

Timo Werner 8

At last. Scored the winner after being unfortunate to see an earlier goal ruled out.

Kept on making runs into dangerous areas and got the reward he richly deserved. This could be lift-off.

Romelu Lukaku 5

Still signs that he is not on the same wavelength as his teammates. They need to get the ball into the box quicker for him to make the most of them. Looks stranded at times.

Substitutes

Mason Mount (Hudson-Odoi, 65’) 7

Made a real difference when he came on with his positive runs from deep.

Jorginho (Kovacic, 73’)

Had a major impact in as much as it was the challenge on him that led to Ward-Prowse’ red.

Ross Barkley (Loftus-Cheek, 83’) 5

Again preferred to Saul from the bench. Will he get the chance to reignite his Chelsea career?

Subs: Kepa, Alonso, Christensen, Saul, Havertz, Ziyech
