Chelsea have come to an agreement with Nathan Ake over personal terms, according to a trusted source, as his return to Stamford Bridge moves closer.

Ake originally joined Chelsea as a teenager in 2011. He went on to appear 17 times in their first team, while also taking part in several loan spells.

The centre-back left Chelsea in summer 2017 to get regular game time elsewhere. Bournemouth paid £20.5million to take him to the Vitality Stadium.

Ake spent three seasons with Bournemouth in the Premier League. But he opted to leave in 2020 after their relegation to the Championship was confirmed, which is when Manchester City swooped in.

Pep Guardiola’s side parted with £40m to land the Dutchman. He has gone on to win four Premier League titles and one league cup while playing for City.

Ake doesn’t start for City that often though, due to the likes of Ruben Dias, Aymeric Laporte and John Stones. He usually gets opportunities when one of those three is injured, or in less important cup matches.

Chelsea need new central defenders this summer, following the departures of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen. And they are targeting Ake as a potential solution.

According to Friday’s Transfer Gossip, talks between Chelsea and City have been ‘accelerating’ recently.

Chelsea eye Nathan Ake reunion

Chelsea want to get the capture over the line so Ake can begin working with Thomas Tuchel and preparing for next season.

Respected journalist Fabrizio Romano now gives an update. He reveals Chelsea have come to a full agreement with the defender over personal terms.

City know Ake would like to go back to Chelsea and are waiting for an official bid from their Premier League rivals.

Romano claims the reigning Prem champions will demand £40m-45m for him, although there is no indication of whether Chelsea are willing to meet this sum.

There is also an insight given into City’s transfer plans. Despite already having strong options at centre-half, they will start to look for defensive replacements if Ake moves to West London.

Chelsea have taken a big step forward as they aim to make Ake a successor for Rudiger or Christensen. With personal terms sorted, the Blues can now focus on agreeing a deal with City.

Ake is likely to want the move so he can play more regularly in the league. Chelsea’s lack of options at the back means he will probably play more than 30 times in the Prem next term. In contrast, he only made 14 league appearances under Guardiola last season.

Meanwhile, a Chelsea youngster could link up with Aston Villa as Steven Gerrard is reportedly a ‘massive fan’ of his.
