Chelsea have put plenty of research into the potential signing of a Real Madrid defender and it is “not impossible” that they could get it over the line in January, according to a report.

Chelsea’s defence has been undergoing an evolution in recent months. After the end of last season, they lost Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen on free transfers to Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively.

To replenish their depth, they signed Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli and Wesley Fofana from Leicester City. Another reinforcement has followed in January; Benoit Badiashile recently completed a transfer from Monaco.

But the Blues are now reportedly looking into yet another defensive deal, which would align with the transfer strategy overseen by Todd Boehly’s ownership group.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Chelsea are keen to sign Rafa Marin from Real Madrid.

The 20-year-old will be out of contract in 2023 and the La Liga champions are willing to cash in this year if he does not show a willingness to renew.

The report claims Marin could be available for a fee between £5million and £10million. For big-spending Chelsea, that won’t be a problem.

Although a summer transfer seems more likely, it is “not impossible” that Marin could be on the move this month.

Chelsea have scouted the centre-back “extensively”, so will be hoping their efforts are worthwhile.

There is the risk that another club could beat them to Marin’s signature. According to the report, Juventus and RB Leipzig are rival suitors for the Spaniard.

But Chelsea are aiming to win the race for Marin, who has made 45 appearances for Real Madrid Castilla, Los Blancos’ B team.

He is still waiting for his senior debut. But Chelsea might be able to snap him up before he gets the chance.

Chelsea keep adding talent for the future

In turn, he could add to the growing pool of young talent Chelsea have brought in under Boehly’s regime. In recent months, they have signed the likes of Carney Chukwuemeka, Cesare Casadei, Gabriel Slonina, Omari Hutchinson, Andrey Santos and David Datro Fofana.

Wesley Fofana and Badiashile were both 21 years old at the time of their arrivals, too. Therefore, Chelsea are clearly working with an eye to the future.

Marin is highly rated and could have an exciting career ahead of him, so Chelsea would be interested in having him in their setup.

Their mission to bring in talent for the future has not been restricted to domestic deals. Casadei came from Inter in Italy, Santos from Vasco da Gama in Brazil, Slonina from Chicago Fire in the USA, and Datro Fofana from Molde in Norway, for instance.

Now, their scouts have been busy in Spain to determine whether or not Marin would be worth investing in. The signs seem positive, so perhaps they could make a move in the coming months, or even weeks.
