The game was fiercely competitive, with both sides keen to take control in the centre of midfield before Chelsea's Jeremie Boga struck the winner.
The hosts had already been reduced to 10 men on 53 minutes when Anton Polyutkin was red carded for a dangerous challenge, and subsequently the momentum swung in Chelsea's favour.
Boga punished the hosts on 71 minutes to give Chelsea a 1-0 lead.
However, Jordan Houghton (pictured) of Chelsea was given a second yellow card seven minutes later which saw both teams a man down.
CSKA pushed hard for an equaliser but were unable to wear their English opponents down as the Blues brought the Russians' undefeated run to an end.
