Graham Potter is intent on bringing an explosive Italy forward to Chelsea, though a report claims a deal can only be made if they include a Blues talisman as part of an incredible swap deal.
Chelsea’s issues in the final third have been there for all to see this season. They’re the lowest scorers of every side currently stationed in the top half of the Premier League table.
Their 17 goals scored mean the Blues are barely registering more than a goal per game. For a club with genuine aspirations of lifting silverware each season, that simply won’t do.
Christopher Nkunku will go some way to remedying their attacking woes. The Blues are understood to have already conducted a secret medical back in August and have lined up an arrival at some stage in 2023 for the RB Leipzig flier. His release clause stands at €60m, though Chelsea may pay over the odds to get the deal done early.
However, they cannot afford to pin their hopes on one man and according to CalciomercatoWeb, Juventus’ Federico Chiesa is also in their sights.
Chiesa, 25, is Italy’s big hope in the final third and played a starring role in their successful Euro 2020 campaign.
He was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League following that tournament, not least to Stamford Bridge.
However, Chiesa suffered an ACL injury in January that ended his 2021/22 campaign and any hopes of a summer switch. He recently returned to action earlier in November and wasted no time when providing an assist in the impressive 3-0 victory over Lazio.
Juventus are understood to value Chiesa around the €100m (approx. £87m) mark. The fact his contract doesn’t expire until 2025 means the Old Lady can stick to such lofty demands.
Potter driving Chelsea chase for Chiesa?
CalciomercatoWeb report Blues boss Graham Potter ‘thinks of [Chiesa] intensely’ and is eyeing a move for the next summer window.
However, it’s claimed any such proposal will be met with a counter – the inclusion of Mason Mount in an ‘insane’ swap.
Mount, 23, is a product of Chelsea’s academy and has been one of the club’s most influential players under multiple managers. However, that’s not stopped doubts beginning to creep in over his long-term future.
His current deal expires in 2024 and the Telegraph have already mentioned Newcastle as a potential next step.
Mount contract situation makes suitors stand up
Fabrizio Romano recently reported talks over a contract extension at the Bridge are “under discussion”, though the transfer guru was keen to point out they’re by no means near a breakthrough.
The Guardian reported Liverpool and Juventus were keeping a close eye on how Mount’s situation develops. Clearly, there won’t be a lack of suitors if Mount’s time at Chelsea is coming to an end.
Calcio don’t state whether Mount and Chiesa would be straight swapped or whether money would be included from one side to sweeten the deal. However, they do stress Chelsea are ‘serious’ about signing Chiesa, one way or another.
If Juventus insist Mount be included in any such sale, Chelsea will have a decision to make on a player who may yet go down as a club legend if he stays for the long haul.
