Chelsea step up Sam Kerr contract talks after Women’s FA Cup Final heroics

Chelsea want to tie Sam Kerr down to a new contract after her latest goalscoring heroics in the Women’s FA Cup Final.

Kerr scored in her sixth consecutive domestic cup final as the Blues beat Manchester United 1-0 win at Wembley on Sunday.

The 29-year-old Australian’s current deal expires at the end of next season but Chelsea want to secure her long-term future.

Kerr is in line for a lucrative new deal that would be an increase on her current salary, which is thought to be around £400,000 a year.

She has scored 88 goals in 112 matches since joining Chelsea in 2019 and wants to become their all-time top goalscorer, a record currently held by team-mate Fran Kirby.

Kerr, who is increasingly being compared to Didier Drogba due to her big game moments, will hope to help keep Chelsea on course for the WSL title when they travel to West Ham tonight.

Victory for the Blues, in what is their games in hand, will see them leapfrog leaders Manchester United. A draw would leave the two title rivals level on points, and with the same goal difference, with just two games remaining.

Chelsea want to tie down Kerr as they bid to ensure they do not lose further talent to rivals, after Pernille Harder and captain Magdalena Eriksson recently agreed to join Bayern Munich at the end of the season.
