Chelsea have agreed a £62million fee to sign Brighton left-back Marc Cucurella and will next turn their full attention to signing Leicester centre-back Wesley Fofana.

The Blues will pay an initial £55m for Cucurella, with a further £7m in add-ons, and teenager defender Levi Colwill will move the other way to Brighton on loan.

Chelsea’s desire to loan Colwill rather than sell him has raised the fee for Cucurella from £52.5m and will make him their fourth most expensive signing of all time.

The deal will take the summer spending at Stamford Bridge beyond £150m and they are ready to continue their spending as they target another defender.

Fofana is their primary target but, despite his desire to move to Stamford Bridge, Leicester have made it clear they do not want to lose the 21-year-old.

That could force Chelsea to pay over £80m for Fofana, who has five years left on his contract after signing a new deal in March.

Leicester want what would be a world-record fee for a defender, which was set in 2019 when they sold Harry Maguire to Manchester United for £80m.

Chelsea are primarily focusing on signing a central defender after losing Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen on free transfers to both Real Madrid and Barcelona.

They have turned to Fofana after missing out on Matthijs de Ligt, Nathan Ake, Jules Kounde and Presnel Kimpembe.

Chelsea looked set to go into the new season without Cesar Azpilicueta but he last night signed a two-year contract, ending links with a move to Barcelona.

The Blues will consider moves for Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and Frenkie de Jong after being offered the chance to sign the Barcelona pair.
