Chelsea have not given up hope of signing Shakhtar Donetsk winger Mykhaylo Mudryk despite news that Arsenal are getting closer to his signature, according to reports.

The Blues have been extremely active already in the January transfer window with the club bringing in Monaco’s Benoit Badiashile, Molde’s David Datro Fofana, Vasco da Gama’s Andrey Santos and Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix.

But it looks unlikely to stop there with over half of the month left and there are still claims Mudryk remains one of their priorities if they can beat Arsenal to his signature.

Journalist Rudy Galetti claimed yesterday that talks between Arsenal and Shakhtar were ‘entering the final stage’ of negotiations with the two clubs agreeing a fee of ‘around €85/90m’ for the 22-year-old.

It is now believed that the only thing left to agree is the structure of the deal with the Gunners not keen to pay a huge sum up front.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also confirmed that a third bid had been placed for the Ukraine international with the clubs ‘now getting closer’ but he insisted there had been ‘no breakthrough yet’.

And now ESPN claim that Chelsea are still hopeful of crashing the party with the Blues ‘still in talks’ with Shakhtar over a potential move for Mudryk.

They say that Arsenal ‘hopes of having a clear path to complete a deal’ for Mudryk ‘have been dashed with Chelsea ‘still attempting to sign him’ despite the signing of Felix, who was sent off on his debut yesterday.

ESPN adds:

‘Sources have told ESPN that talks over a deal for Mudryk are still ongoing with both Arsenal and Chelsea and that the Felix deal has not altered Chelsea’s determination to sign the Ukraine international.’

Mudryk put a praying emoji on his Instagram story as reports emerged on Thursday evening that Arsenal had made a new bid, in the clearest indication yet that he wants to move to the Emirates Stadium.

It now seems like the only way a move to Chelsea over Arsenal would happen is if the Blues completely outbid the Gunners, leaving Mudryk with only one option.

Arsenal chief executive Vinai Venkatesham would not be drawn on their reported interest in Mudryk earlier this week, he said: “You know the answer I’m going to give you. We’re not going to talk about specific players.”
