Marcos Alonso took advantage of another David de Gea mistake to earn Chelsea a valuable point in the battle to finish in the top four at Manchester United.

The struggling De Gea fumbled a routine save just before half-time, gifting Alonso the chance to nip in and cancel out Juan Mata’s early opener.

It means Chelsea just need to win their final two games of the Premier League season to qualify for next year’s Champions League, with Arsenal two points behind them and Manchester United a further point back.

The point did come at a price for both sides though, with Marcus Rashford, Eric Bailly, Willian and Antonio Rudiger all being substituted with injuries in a feisty game at Old Trafford.

United started with a real urgency and Romelu Lukaku had already passed up a good opportunity when Mata opened the scoring on 12 minutes.

Lukaku found Luke Shaw’s advancing run on the left-hand side of the box. He got to the by-line and cut the ball back, hoping to find an advancing midfielder. It found Mata, who made no mistake from the edge of the six-yard box.

Chelsea fought back and Alonso blazed a free-kick over the bar, before Jorginho saw two efforts from the edge of the area fail to test the keeper. But United nearly doubled their lead after 30 minutes.

Eric Bailly, starting his first Premier League game in nearly three months, rose highest at a corner and saw his glancing header bounce agonisingly wide of the post.

And on the stroke of half-time Chelsea made them pay for that miss with an equaliser. It was another goal that De Gea will not want to watch back.

Rudiger’s long-range effort was hopeful and should have been simple for the Spaniard, but De Gea fumbled it and, unlike United’s defenders, Alonso reacted quickly to turn the ball in off the post.

Both sides struggled to create chances after the break in a game that was disrupted by numerous fouls and injuries on both sides.

Rashford was the first player taken off with what appeared to be a shoulder problem, Rudiger took a heavy knock and limped off ahead of Chelsea’s Europa League semi-final first-leg with Eintracht Frankfurt will be a worry for Maurizio Sarri, while Bailly’s knee injury looked serious.

Willian was the final player taken off with an injury and Marcos Rojo was particularly lucky to escape with only a booking after an ill-judged lunge. That he nearly proved the match-winner was controversial.

After a second-half of few chances, the seven minutes of added-on time was full of action.

As the clock ticked into the 93rd minute, Rojo met a corner with his head and directed it back across goal. Fortunately for Chelsea – and Martin Atkinson – Pedro was alert to the danger and moved back onto the line to head it clear.

Gonzalo Higuain then passed up a glorious chance to win it in the 97th minute as De Gea made himself big to divert the Argentine’s shot wide, after Pedro played him through.
