Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson has told his former side that they need to sign Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowksi.

It was reported earlier this week that the Polish forward would like to leave the club this summer with Barcelona touted as a possible destination.

Real Madrid still hold market power when the transfer playing field is level – as Rudiger proves

The forward has won the Bundesliga every season since joining the club back in 2014 and has an extraordinary goalscoring record which has seen him score 237 goals on 252 games.

He also helped Jurgen Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund side secure back-to-back league titles between 2010 and 2012, meaning he has won the division ten times in just 12 seasons.

Should he depart Germany this summer in search of a new challenge, many clubs are likely to be keen on bringing him in.

And former Blues defender Johnson believes Chelsea should look to take advantage of his situation and bring his to Stamford Bridge.

As quoted by the Daily Star, Johnson said: “For a club like Chelsea, I think they need to sign Robert Lewandowski.

“He is a more realistic signing, but these top, world-class strikers are hard to find. For his age and the possibility of the deal actually happening, I’d say Chelsea should sign Lewandowski.

“Chelsea obviously tried when they broke the bank for Romelu Lukaku and obviously [Erling] Haaland was the one they would have liked to have signed, but it was always going to be hard to trump Manchester City, Liverpool or a team like Real Madrid so he was unlikely going to end up at Chelsea.

“Getting to the level of City and Liverpool is so hard for anybody, but they need to be consistent. On their day, Chelsea can beat anyone but the consistency that’s shown by City and Liverpool isn’t easy.

“You need a big squad, you need players that are buying into what the manager is doing and you need a good set of 18 to 20 players, so Chelsea need to invest and make sure that everyone is on board with what the club is trying to achieve.

“Let’s face it though, City and Liverpool at the moment are miles ahead of anyone.”
