One pundit has told Chelsea what Christian Pulisic “needs” in his career, amid heavy links to a move to another Premier League club.
Pulisic joined Chelsea as one of European football’s hottest talents. Indeed, his form during his time at Borussia Dortmund showed him to be a quality asset.
The season before his move, the American had contributed to eight goals in 20 Bundesliga games – almost one every other game.
That impact led to him being snapped up by Chelsea for a fee of more than £50million. There have been moments of magic, as Pulisic has contributed to 37 goals in 129 Blues appearances.
However, he has found it difficult to become one of the main men of the team. His most appearances in a 38-game Premier League season were 27 in the 2020/21 campaign, and he started just 18 of those.
Pulisic has found himself on the pitch in most games this season, missing just three games in all competitions. However, of his 14 appearances, only four have been from the start.
His role has changed recently under new manager Graham Potter, too. While he is a winger by trade, the manager has tried Pulisic out in a wing-back role.
The American has fulfilled that duty twice: once against RB Salzburg and once against Brighton.
Pundit hails Pulisic adaptability
Pulisic has not been the only Chelsea star who has been tried out in a position he is not accustomed to. With Potter’s system using both wing-backs and wide forwards, and the Blues having an abundance of wide men in their ranks, others have also been tried at the back.
Raheem Sterling is one of the Chelsea men to have also played at wing-back. American pundit Eric Wynalda has hailed Pulisic for taking to the role better than his teammate.
“Sterling played wing back once and that did not go well at all,” Wynalda said (via the Express).
“There were a lot of looks to the bench. There was ‘I can’t defend’. ‘I should be up there where Mount’s playing’. ‘Put me up there I don’t wanna be here’. His ego really was the reason why that hasn’t happened again.
“Pulisic is saying ‘I’ll play, I got it. Let’s go’ and that’s why we got to see him at wing-back.
“He got an assist [against Salzburg] out of the game where he came inside to pick up the ball which might be him indicating to his manager that he needs more of the ball and he doesn’t want to be chasing the ball. He wants to have the ball.”
While that might be the case, the forward talent in the ranks at Stamford Bridge means opportunities higher up will be hard to come by.
Pulisic transfer needed
Pulisic is still only 24, so there is a lot of time for him to find his feet and perform at a high standard. Wynalda, though, thinks that might have to be away from Chelsea.
“Long-term future he needs to be a left winger in a team where he’s going to get more time,” he said.
“I would not mind seeing Christian Pulisic wearing the black and white stripes of Newcastle.”
There has been a lot of talk about Pulisic swapping Chelsea for Newcastle. In fact, recent reports have stated he has green-lit the transfer himself, with the Magpies having been keen to take him on board since the summer.
A move to St James’ Park could be perfect for the winger. He could become one of their star talents and have a real impact on the side, while surely playing consistently.
They are on the up under Eddie Howe, and buying into that project now could give any player the chance at playing for a powerhouse of English football in a few years’ time.
