Chelsea transfer news: Attacking midfield signing back on with target claiming ‘negotiations are underway’

Chelsea could still be in with a chance of signing Arsen Zakharyan from Dynamo Moscow after the attacking midfielder suggested talks are still being held about his transfer.

Zakharyan was on Chelsea’s radar over the summer, but despite a bid in August, they were unable to sign him. Indeed, they were not allowed to send money to a Russian club due to British sanctions following the country’s invasion of Ukraine.

Chelsea could otherwise have got their hands on Zakharyan by activating a €15million release clause in his contract. Right now, that would cost them around £13million.

Despite the ongoing conflict, Chelsea are still keeping tabs on Zakharyan for the future. When their attempt to sign him fell through, his agent suggested it would still be possible for him to move to the Premier League club in the future.

Since then, Zakharyan himself has also hinted that something might still be happening with Chelsea.

Recently, he has told Sport-Express in his native country that “negotiations are underway”, although he is not able to reveal everything that is going on.

Asked if his Chelsea story is over before it has begun, Zakharyan said: “I don’t think about it now. You can ask the club, my representatives.

“I think it’s all right. Negotiations are underway. But I will not reveal all the cards.”

This season, in the Premier Liga, Zakharyan has scored three goals and provided six assists from 20 appearances in all competitions.

He has largely been featuring as an attacking midfielder, although he can operate out wide as well.

In total, across his career with the Dynamo Moscow first team, Zakharyan has played in 67 matches, scoring 15 goals and adding 20 assists.

Still only 19 years old, he has already gained four caps for the senior Russia national team.

There could be a bright future ahead of him, although factors beyond his control are preventing him from joining Chelsea at the moment. In the future, though, he could yet have hope.

Chelsea have been investing in young talents since their new owners took charge. For example, they have brought in the likes of Carney Chukwuemeka and Cesare Casadei.

Zakharyan could also join their midfield department in the months or years to come. For now, though, he will continue to develop with Dynamo Moscow.

His contract with them is due to expire in June 2024.
