Chelsea transfer news: Prime Potter target waiting after denying existing approach while revealing current stance

Chelsea are yet to make an approach for Brighton midfielder Leandro Trossard, who has hinted at his intentions ahead of the January transfer window.

Trossard is the main name among a number of Brighton players to have been linked with Chelsea since head coach Graham Potter swapped the Seagulls for the Blues.

The Belgium international made an impression under Potter at the Amex Stadium thanks to his versatility and output. He has kept it up even after the manager moved on, meaning he has seven goals and three assists from 13 Premier League appearances so far this season.

Chelsea are looking for more ways to create danger in the final third, which has made Trossard an intriguing target. What’s more, his contract with Brighton is only due to run until the end of the season (unless his current employers activate an option to extend it by a further year).

Therefore, he should be an affordable acquisition if he wants the move. But as things stand, it appears that his mind is elsewhere.

Talking to Het Laatste Nieuws, Trossard has admitted he is focusing on Brighton for the time being ahead of the World Cup. Besides, Chelsea have not tried to touch base yet.

Trossard said: “Chelsea have in any case not yet reported. Not with Brighton and not with me.

“I have to wait and see. I want to finish strong at Brighton and leave for Qatar with that good feeling.”

After the World Cup, Trossard might have to give more attention to his club situation.

The prospect of reuniting with Potter might be tempting, as it would also allow him to step up to Champions League level under a coach who has brought the best out of him before.

Indeed, according to Trossard, there was constant development under the Blues boss at Brighton. That said, the 27-year-old feels particularly at home in the system of Potter’s replacement, Roberto De Zerbi.

Trossard opens up on switch from Potter to De Zerbi

Of Potter’s departure in September, Trossard said: “That was very strange, because I’ve always played under Potter at Brighton and have got better year after year.

“You go through the full preparation and suddenly a new coach is there in September. Then you don’t know what to expect, but the reactions about De Zerbi were only positive.

“He really wants to play football and the way he wants to play suits me perfectly.”

Indeed, Brighton’s form has not fallen off too much since their positive start to the season under Potter. De Zerbi’s side are still sixth in the Premier League, level on points with Chelsea after 13 games each.

Whether they can keep it up for an entire season remains to be seen. If they lose a key player like Trossard midway through, it would not help.

But he seems committed enough for now, with Brighton preparing to host Aston Villa on Sunday November 13 for their final match before the World Cup break.
