Chelsea transfers: Pochettino beats Man Utd, PSG to dominant star after Blues agree over the odds fee
A Chelsea move for a dominant midfielder has been labelled ‘done’, with a report revealing how much they’ll pay above and beyond the player’s €60m release clause.
Amid serious uncertainty surrounding many of their midfield stars, Chelsea began eyeing up Sporting Lisbon and Uruguay star, Manuel Ugarte.
Indeed, Mason Mount has struck an agreement on personal terms to join Man Utd. Mateo Kovacic looks bound for Man City, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek is in advanced talks with AC Milan. N’Golo Kante, meanwhile, will become a free agent on June 30.
As such, new manager Mauricio Pochettino may soon be in desperate need of midfield reinforcements. Ugarte, 22, is a player he’s turned to.
Ugarte averaged an incredible 4.2 tackles per game across all competitions for Sporting last term. He averaged 1.8 interceptions per 90m and a sky high passing accuracy of 90.5 percent ensures he rarely surrenders possession.
Ugarte’s dominant two-year stint with Sporting has not gone unnoticed, with Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool and PSG all heavily linked. But according to Portuguese outlet Record, it’s Chelsea who are about to pull off the coup.
Chelsea outbid PSG
Record state ‘the deal is closed’ when running the rule over Ugarte to Chelsea. They then state Ugarte ‘will be Chelsea’s reinforcement’.
Ugarte’s contract contains a release clause worth €60m. Record claimed PSG were prepared to match the clause, though so too are Chelsea who have agreed to stump up an extra €5m in add-ons. As such, the total fee could reach €65m (approx. £56m).
Record add personal terms are already agreed and Ugarte ‘says goodbye’ to Sporting.
ESPN add weight to the claims when detailing Chelsea’s way of going above and beyond the release fee.
The outlet state: ‘Chelsea are adding solidarity payments and various bonuses which makes their proposition more attractive’ than PSG. The French side were seemingly only willing to pay the release clause and nothing more.
As such, it’s claimed Sporting are ‘pushing’ Ugarte to complete his move to Stamford Bridge.
ESPN and Fabrizio Romano both suggest details are still to be ironed out in the move, and don’t definitively claim it’s a done deal as Record do.
However, the signs are certainly pointing towards Ugarte lining up in west London next season.
