Chelsea 1-2 Brighton LIVE! Premier League result, match stream, latest reaction and updates today
Frank Lampard’s winless return to Chelsea continued as Brighton earned a thoroughly-deserved 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge. After defeats to Wolves and Real Madrid, Chelsea went in search of a confidence-boosting victory against the Seagulls, before attention turns back to the Champions League in midweek.
Conor Gallagher put the Blues in front, and it was Chelsea’s first goal in the Premier League for the month, but from then on it was one-way traffic throughout the match and Brighton eventually got themselves into a position that their performance deserved.
Danny Welbeck equalised before the break with effectively his first touch after coming onto the pitch and, after a constant stream of missed chances, Julio Enciso netted a stunning winner from distance with 20 minutes remaining. It keeps Brighton’s hopes of European football next season firmly alive, and is just another blow for Chelsea in a dismal campaign.

Mykhailo Mudryk - 7
Mudryk started the match brightly, creating chances, firing shots off and getting Joel Veltman booked. He played Gallagher in for his goal with a subtle reverse pass.
Raheem Sterling - 4
Taken off in the 57th minute to rest for Real Madrid having just touched the ball 15 times. Almost a non-existent display playing in a false nine position.

FT: Chelsea 1-2 Brighton
16:58 , Matt Verri
The Seagulls do the double over Chelsea!
More than deserved too, they’ve been absolutely superb at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea woeful, aside from a decent first ten minutes and an ok final five.
Real Madrid next...
16:55 , Matt Verri
90+4 mins: Mudryk picks the ball up on the halfway line and just runs at the Brighton defence.
Goes inside, onto his right foot and tries his luck from a fair distance out. Just rises over the bar.
16:54 , Matt Verri
90+3 mins: Enciso the latest Brighton player to go down with cramp, home fans getting more and more annoyed with the timewasting going on.
Imagine there could be another minute or so added on to these six.
16:51 , Matt Verri
90 mins: Six minutes added on.
Chelsea having more of the ball now, but Brighton still look solid in their shape. Going to need something special from the hosts.
16:49 , Matt Verri
88 mins: Great work from James out wide, fires a low cross into the six-yard box. Nobody there in a blue shirt for a tap-in.
Chance for Chelsea to put the ball back in though, Gross has given away a free-kick right on the byline.
16:47 , Matt Verri
86 mins: Webster is going to be forced off with injury, he’s limping off. Mudryk fine to continue by the way, not sure what his issue was when going down.
Van Hecke is on for the Seagulls.
16:44 , Matt Verri
82 mins: Chelsea having a much better spell, though that’s an incredible low bar.
Felix and Mudryk nearly combine, but Dunk gets a good header in. Mudryk has probably been Chelsea’s best player, but he’s just gone down off the ball.
They’ve got no changes left to make...
16:40 , Matt Verri
79 mins: Mudryk gets away from the Brighton defence, cut back deflects into the path of Mount.
Off balance, 25 yards out and he balloons an effort high into the stands.
16:38 , Matt Verri
77 mins: Mudryk blasts the ball straight out of play. It was supposed to be a pass. This has been a mess from Chelsea this afternoon.
Sanchez into the book for timewasting, no idea why he’s bothering. Brighton are cutting Chelsea apart at will.
16:34 , Matt Verri
74 mins: Welbeck down holding his hand, looks to be in a fair bit of pain.
Lampard turns to his bench for the final time. Mount on for the final 15 minutes or so to replace Zakaria.
16:33 , Matt Verri
72 mins: It’s taken 24 shots, but Brighton finally have the lead they deserved.
Welbeck down on the edge of the box, thinks he should have a free-kick. Whistle does go... for offside.
GOAL! Chelsea 1-2 Brighton | Julio Enciso 69'
16:30 , Matt Verri
STUNNING!
Well that’s been coming, to put it mildly.
Enciso not closed down, lets fly from distance and it is hammered into the top corner. Kepa doesn’t have a chance.
16:29 , Matt Verri
68 mins: James struggling against Mitoma, just as Chalobah did in the first hour.
Right-back does well to get back just in time, pokes the ball behind for a corner as Mitoma looked to be in.
16:27 , Matt Verri
66 mins: Chelsea have done something!
Mudryk denied by Sanchez, and Brighton are then robbed on the edge of their area. Kovacic looks to be in, but Dunk slides in to deny him.
The crowd have woken up too now.
16:24 , Matt Verri
63 mins: Brighton would have had more difficult training sessions than this.
Mitoma in behind, pokes an effort at goal but Kepa smothers the shot. Would be unbelievable if Chelsea got something from this match.
Shot count now 22-3 in Brighton’s favour.
16:20 , Matt Verri
60 mins: Estupinan with so much space 25 yards out, drags a shot wide of the far post. The shot count has ticked beyond 20 for Brighton now, with half an hour to go.
HUGE CHANCE! This is crazy. Encisco somehow beats James to the ball, drives into the box. Fires against the post, Welbeck then misses an open goal from the rebound.
16:17 , Matt Verri
57 mins: Lampard has seen enough, as Mitoma slides the pass inside and Welbeck has an effort blocked. Chelsea haven’t had a kick since the break.
Time for a quadruple change! Ziyech, Kovacic, Felix and James are on, Pulisic, Fernandez, Fofana and Sterling all make way.
16:14 , Matt Verri
54 mins: It is incredible how one-sided this match is.
Enciso picked out by Mitoma, shot across goal is parried out by Kepa. Another effort comes in, blocked by Welbeck who couldn’t get out of the way.
Chelsea hanging on for dear life.
16:13 , Matt Verri
52 mins: Chalobah goes in late on Estupinan, loses his balance so it looks worse than it is. Earns himself a yellow card.
Mitoma will enjoy running at him even more now, Chelsea man has to be very careful in the next 40 minutes.
16:10 , Matt Verri
50 mins: Chelsea cannot live with Brighton, it’s fairly obvious by now. Estupinan gets in behind, looks to hammer the ball across the face of goal and it’s blocked behind for a corner.
Initially cleared, Gross clips the ball back in but it’s easy for Kepa to claim.
16:09 , Matt Verri
48 mins: Well, more of the same since the break. Brighton having all of the ball.
Enciso has space outside the box, fires straight at Kepa. Chelsea lose it immediately, Welbeck can get a shot away of his own and again it’s comfortable for the goalkeeper.
Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge
16:06 , Matt Verri
Christian Pulisic’s handball wasn’t given as a penalty for Brighton in the first-half because it was deemed part of his normal running action.
Back underway!
16:05 , Matt Verri
Up and running again at Stamford Bridge!
Not a great stat for Chelsea....
16:02 , Matt Verri
12 - Brighton attempted 12 shots in the first half at Stamford Bridge; the joint-most that Chelsea have faced in the first half of a Premier League home game on record (since 2003-04). Peppered. pic.twitter.com/3FhQG1uK1g

15:55 , Matt Verri
Nearly 70% possession for Brighton, 12 shots and five of those have been on target. Chelsea have had three shots in total, with that deflected Gallagher strike for the opening goal the only one on target.
Sterling has been anonymous for the hosts, Pulisic quiet too. Mudryk started well but has faded, while Chelsea’s midfield have been completely overrun.
Plenty for Lampard to consider.
HT: Chelsea 1-1 Brighton
15:50 , Matt Verri
And that is half-time. Better from Chelsea right on the whistle, Pulisic heads against the post.
Brighton completely dominant, have created so many chances but they somehow go in level.
Chelsea scored with a rare attack, needing the help of a deflection. They’ve been really poor, fortunate not to be a couple of goals behind.
15:48 , Matt Verri
45+2 mins: Mac Allister fires at goal from distance, loops away for a corner. Not far away from flying into the top corner.
Chalobah hammers the ball up the pitch, Chelsea very keen to hear the half-time whistle.
15:47 , Matt Verri
45 mins: Gallagher into the book for a late challenge on Caicedo. Completely pointless yellow card to pick up.
Four minutes added on at the end of the first half, after those injury stoppages.
15:46 , Matt Verri
44 mins: Brighton continue to push after that goal, if anyone’s going to score before half-time it looks like being them.
Superb display from the Seagulls this afternoon, Chelsea haven’t been able to get near them for must of the match.
GOAL! Chelsea 1-1 Brighton | Danny Welbeck 42'
15:43 , Matt Verri
BRIGHTON LEVEL!
To say that’s deserved would be a huge understatement. Pretty much his first touch since coming on.
Gross swings the cross in, Welbeck there at the back post and he heads past a motionless Kepa.
15:40 , Matt Verri
39 mins: A rare Chelsea attack! Fofana of all people bursts away down the right, all sorts of space for him out wide.
Clips the cross to the back post, Sterling... heads it the wrong way. Assume he was trying to nod it down for Mudryk, but got it all wrong.
Welbeck is now on to replace Ferguson, second change Brighton have been forced into.
Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge
15:39 , Matt Verri
Kepa has been Chelsea’s best player today which tells you the story of the match.
15:38 , Matt Verri
37 mins: Kepa fine to continue, Ferguson looks in a fair bit of pain still as he limps off the pitch but he’s going to try and carry on.
Eventually back underway, March swings the corner in and it’s booted away by Chilwell at the near post.
In fact, Ferguson won’t be continuing. Welbeck getting ready on the touchline.
15:35 , Matt Verri
34 mins: Another Brighton chance!
Cross stood up to the back post, Ferguson powers a header at goal and Kepa turns it over the bar brilliantly.
Both have stayed down, going to need some treatment.
15:34 , Matt Verri
33 mins: Chalobah JUST about does enough in the box. Mitoma is in behind him again, glorious first touch but the Chelsea man slides in and flicks the ball away.
That was very, very nearly a penalty, but good defending in the end.
15:32 , Matt Verri
31 mins: Brighton have been so, so good. The better side by a mile but nothing to show for it.
Mac Allister with great footwork on the edge of the box, works the space for a shot. Not enough bend on the shot, flies wide.
Cucurella meanwhile is warming up in front of the away fans. He’s not particularly popular, we’ll leave it at that.
15:31 , Matt Verri
29 mins: Guardiola called Brighton the best team in the world at building play up from the back... you can see why.
They’re almost caught on the edge of their own box, but in a matter of seconds they’re up the pitch. Mitoma with another chance, poked wide of the far post.
15:30 , Matt Verri
28 mins: Brighton forced into an early change. Veltman, on a yellow card, has gone down injured and he won’t be able to continue. Enciso the man to replace him.
Looks like Gross has shifted to right-back, he’s now up against Mudryk. Best of luck.
15:28 , Matt Verri
26 mins: March in space 25 yards out... whipped over the bar.
Here come Brighton again though, it’s a superb run from Mitoma as he jinks into the Chelsea box. Big chance, big save!
Kepa denies the winger, who has been sensational so far this afternoon.
15:25 , Matt Verri
24 mins: Real waste from Pulisic, in the Brighton box this time.
Estupinan slides in to cut out Sterling’s pass through, the American beats him though and has four players to pick out in the box.
Instead lashes it high over everyone and away to safety.
Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge
15:24 , Matt Verri
Brighton may have got another bad VAR call against then. Christian Pulisic appears to have handballed it in his own box.
15:23 , Matt Verri
21 mins: Gross makes the run in behind this time, March unable to pick him out.
Just before that, Brighton had an optimistic penalty appeal as Pulisic tracked back with Estupinan. Ball did hit his arm, but VAR not interested at all.
15:21 , Matt Verri
19 mins: Gross can drive towards the Chelsea box, plenty of space for a shot but opts for a cute reverse pass instead. Doesn’t come off.
Brighton win it back, Estupinan clips a cross in but Kepa is off his line confidently to claim.
Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge
15:19 , Matt Verri
Chelsea score their first goal in over 390 minutes and Mykhailo Mudryk at the heart of it.
His dribble and cushioned pass let Conor Gallagher shoot first time to score it.
15:17 , Matt Verri
16 mins: Brighton have seen plenty of the ball early on, Chelsea happy to let their centre-backs have it. Imagine we’ll see even more of that now.
The Blues are very nearly caught out at the back, Zakaria has to slide in with Mac Allister lurking.
GOAL! Chelsea 1-0 Brighton | Conor Gallagher 14'
15:15 , Matt Verri
CHELSEA TAKE THE LEAD!
Very fortunate but they don’t care! Mudryk brings the ball forward, slides the pass inside to Gallagher and he gets the shot away from 20 yards out.
Takes a huge deflection off Dunk and spins beyond Sanchez.
15:14 , Matt Verri
13 mins: Brighton so sharp in attack. Chelsea looking very vulnerable, for all they’ve had good moments going forward too.
Ferguson drops in again, looks to feed it wide to Mitoma but shanks the wide straight out of play.
15:11 , Matt Verri
10 mins: And now Ferguson hits the woodwork!
Picks the ball up on the edge of the box, allowed to turn and he curls an effort that smacks back off the bar.
15:10 , Matt Verri
8 mins: Big chance!
Mitoma drives forward on the left, beats Chalobah far too easily as he skips into the box.
Cut back for Mac Allister, in all sorts of space and he passes the effort wide of the far post.
Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge
15:09 , Matt Verri
Mykhailo Mudryk has start well. Creating chances, getting shots off and getting Joel Veltman booked.
15:08 , Matt Verri
7 mins: Mudryk has started really well, pounces on a loose pass and whips a cross into the six-yard box. Hacked behind for a corner by Dunk.
Sanchez punches it out to Mudryk, tries his luck from distance on his right foot. Always flying wide.
15:06 , Matt Verri
5 mins: A very early yellow card for Veltman, as Mudryk causes him a whole world of problem.
The winger burns past him, cuts inside and is basically rugby-tackled to the floor as Veltman loses his balance. Much more like it from Mudryk, haven’t seen enough of that since his move.
Chilwell swings the free-kick in, well-defended by Brighton.
15:05 , Matt Verri
3 mins: Relatively low-key start to the match, Brighton already look very confident when they come forward though.
Mitoma slides it wide to Estupinan, cross to the near post and Mac Allister turns the effort into the side-netting from a tight angle.
Nizaar Kinsella at Stamford Bridge
15:03 , Matt Verri
Mudryk left wing, Sterling false 9 and Pulisic on the right wing.
It looks like a 4-4-2 when Chelsea press without the ball but 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 with it. Chalobah at right back.
KICK-OFF!
15:01 , Matt Verri
Up and running at Stamford Bridge!
Here we go!

Teams are out onto the pitch, Kepa the man with the Chelsea armband this afternoon.
Cucurella glances over to his former team-mates, Dunk not exactly giving him a warm look back.

Kai Havertz is out with a knee issue but it is thought to be minor and he could be available to face Real Madrid.

No start for Mount
14:36 , Matt Verri
Mason Mount is still only on the bench, despite all the changes Chelsea have made, writes Nizaar Kinsella.
He would surely have started this afternoon if he was fully fit.
Goalscoring woes continue
14:31 , Matt Verri
Five games without a win now for Chelsea, who have not scored in the four matches they’ve played since the international break.
Obviously Lampard is thinking about the Real Madrid clash in midweek, but this is still an important game for the Blues in terms of trying to find some much-needed confidence.
Or just a goal. A goal would do.

Lampard: Mount already a top-level player
14:20 , Matt Verri
Frank Lampard has backed Mason Mount to again silence his critics after his first prolonged spell of poor form in his Chelsea career.
The 24-year-old has lost the automatic starter status he claimed since Frank Lampard gave him his Chelsea debut in 2019.
This season the midfielder has increasingly been left out for Joao Felix under Graham Potter’s spell in charge. He then developed a niggling abdominal injury and has faced the distraction of fraught contract negotiations with the new owners.
Lampard said: “If anyone thinks Mason Mount is not already a top-level player then I’m not sure what they’re seeing.
“Form is one thing that people can debate. There’s players now that get debated about more than we were in my career. It’s partly social media.
“But from working with Mason, you can ask me, you can ask Thomas Tuchel, you can ask Gareth Southgate, you can ask Graham Potter, it’s clear he’s a top player and he does have a big affiliation with the club.
“One thing I know about Mason, the first thing a top player should have is a real hunger to succeed and play and do well for Chelsea and he’s had that since the first day. He’s still a young player. He can go even further but he’s already a top player.”

Silva, Kante, James and Felix among those rested for Chelsea this afternoon. Chalobah starts at right-back, Fofana and Badiashile get the nod in the centre of defence and it’s a rare chance for Zakaria in midfield.
Up front, Pulisic and Mudryk get their opportunity to impress Lampard.
Sanchez makes his first Brighton start for a month as he comes in for Steele in goal, while Webster replaces Colwill, who is ineligible against his parent club. Ferguson leads the line.

Kepa: Changes costing Chelsea
13:45 , Matt Verri
Kepa Arrizabalaga has warned that Chelsea must drastically improve after a Champions League defeat to Real Madrid on Wednesday night.
Ten-man Chelsea suffered a 2-0 loss and have a mountain to climb if they are to go through and reach the semi-finals.
Arrizabalaga admitted the players must raise their level if they want to get back to winning ways domestically and in Europa.
“We leave with the feeling that they have been superior, it has cost us a lot to play in the opposite half and to create chances,” he said at the Bernabeu. “It could even have been worse after the expulsion, because 30 minutes with one less [player] at the Bernabeu in the Champions League is a lot.
“They have had more chances, we have a lot to improve for the second leg. The feeling is that we are not at our level, we look at ourselves and the players are the first to be responsible.
“There have been three changes of coach, there have been changes in the squad during the season and it is costing us.”

Chelsea risk losing Colwill
13:31 , Matt Verri
Manchester City and Liverpool are ready to raid Chelsea for defender Levi Colwill, as clubs queue up to take advantage of financial threats by poaching homegrown stars from Stamford Bridge, writes Nizaar Kinsella.
Premier League rivals are lining up moves for Chelsea academy talent amid a feeling that the Blues will be forced into a fire sale of young players to meet Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.
Both Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp want to refresh their back lines this summer and have identified left-footed Colwill as a top target.
Colwill has impressed on loan at Brighton this season and is being tipped for an international call-up ahead of Euro 2024 next summer. Chelsea do not want to lose Colwill and are set to enter contract talks with the Cobham graduate to ward off interest from City, having just tied down Ben Chilwell to a new deal.
But there is a feeling that Chelsea could have to cash in on homegrown stars to avoid breaching FFP rules after splashing out more than £600million in the past two transfer windows, and rival clubs sense an opportunity.

Audition for Lampard?
13:18 , Matt Verri
Two matches, two defeats, no goals scored since Lampard returned to Chelsea. Not the best, though the Blues weren’t exactly firing on all cylinders before he arrived.
He’s in charge until the end of the season, but what about beyond the summer? Lampard is the third-favourite to be in the Chelsea dugout for the first game of next season.

De Zerbi stands by behaviour
13:11 , Matt Verri
Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi insists he has no regrets about his behaviour during last week’s loss to Tottenham.
De Zerbi and Spurs interim manager Cristian Stellini were sent off in the second half of Brighton’s ill-tempered 2-1 Premier League defeat after staff from both sides clashed on the touchline.
Both clubs were this week charged by the Football Association following the “mass confrontation” in a game where the Seagulls controversially had two goals disallowed and two strong penalty appeals waved away.
De Zerbi said: “We are still frustrated for sure. We are looking forward to playing again tomorrow. We want to win the game because we deserved to win in Tottenham.
“And, you know, in the interview when I listened (heard) that Tottenham deserved to win, it’s not right, it’s not correct. It’s foxy people. When we won at Arsenal in the Carabao Cup (3-1 in November), I spoke we didn’t deserve the victory - clear. And I don’t love listening to foxy people.”
Asked if he had any regrets about his behaviour in north London, he replied: “No, because I didn’t say bad words and I respect always.
“You have your style of life, I have my style and when I have something to say I am used to speaking in a direct way.”

Standard Sport prediction
12:57 , Matt Verri
It’s very difficult to trust Chelsea at the best of times, so more dropped points look very much on the cards with the focus likely to be on the visit of Real Madrid next week.
Brighton were unfortunate to be beaten by Tottenham but could have a more successful trip to London this time, particularly if Lampard opts to rest some of his key stars.
Brighton to win, 2-0.
Brighton team news
12:51 , Matt Verri
Brighton will be without Levi Colwill, who is not eligible to feature against his parent club, meaning Adam Webster could come in to partner Lewis Dunk.
Adam Lallana and Jeremey Sarmiento both remain out, while Tariq Lamptey is also set to miss out again with a knee injury along with Jakub Moder.
Chelsea team news
12:45 , Matt Verri
Kalidou Koulibaly was forced off with an injury in Madrid and will miss out against Brighton. Ben Chilwell was sent off in the match, but the suspension does not apply domestically and so he is available.
Lampard is set to rotate his side with the Premier League campaign a write-off, potentially saving the likes of N’Golo Kante and Thiago Silva for the second leg against Real.
Predicted Chelsea XI: Kepa; James, Fofana, Badiashile, Chilwell; Gallagher, Enzo, Mount; Sterling, Havertz, Mudryk
