Chelsea vs Man City: Beth England and Maren Mjelde down Women’s Super League title rivals

Beth England and Maren Mjelde both scored within the space of three minutes as Chelsea came from a goal down to beat title rivals Manchester City 2-1 on Sunday, preserving their unbeaten record in the FA Women’s Super League.

The home side had a poor record against Nick Cushing’s side, having gone winless against them in 1,967 days since getting the better of them in 2014 – with five draws and five defeats in that period.

And they dominated from the start, creating plenty of chances and hitting the woodwork twice – including Ji’s fine effort.

But it was the visitors who took the lead against the run of play with a clinical move.

Kiera Walsh robbed the ball from Ramona Bachmann and then sent a delightful ball over the top.

Caroline Weir met it superbly with a volley to convert and grab the lead on the hour mark.

Chelsea rallied though, with City’s rearguard, which had only conceded once all season, finally breached when England headed past Ellie Roebuck after Ji’s effort was spilled in the 79th minute.

And the winner arrived three minutes later: again, Roebuck could only punch a cross straight to England, who angled the ball back towards goal, where Mjelde was lurking to bundle the ball home.

The win, Chelsea’s tenth in a row in all competitions, put the Blues back on top of the standings on 22 points with London rivals Arsenal, who are second on 21 points, due to take on Reading later on Sunday.
