Ajax star Edson Alvarez has been warned that Chelsea only made an offer for him before the transfer window closed because they did not have “nothing else”.

New Chelsea owner Todd Boehly was certainly not shy to get his wallet out during the summer transfer window.

The club spent over £250m on signings as they looked to rebuild after the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen left.

Chelsea are kidding themselves if they think Aubameyang will break the striker curse

Wesley Fofana and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang added to their spending spree after Marc Cucurella, Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly were all brought in for significant fees.

Blues boss Thomas Tuchel has suggested that it is an “immense boost” that the summer window is now closed:

“For us it’s an immense boost to have the window closed, and hopefully to have Auba back in training,” Tuchel said.

“Auba will train on Sunday but I cannot tell you yet if it’s full contact or individually.

“We’ll need to see. He has the mask and the doctors tell me the mask is good and he feels comfortable with it.

“So he would be okay but we need to check it and we need to check it with no contact, half-contact, and then full contact.

“We need to see how he feels with it. It’s too early to make a prediction but he’ll be in training tomorrow morning and we’ll see.”

Juventus midfielder Denis Zakaria was the last player to join Chelsea as his loan move was completed just before the deadline.

The Blues looked at several centre-midfielders during the last couple of days of the transfer window.

PSV star Ibrahim Sangare was targeted after the Dutch club were knocked out of the Champions League.

The 24-year-old is highly rated and he was one of quite a few players Man Utd were linked with.

PSV were not keen to let him or Cody Gakpo leave the club so late in the window, though. Ajax’s Alvarez was also the subject of a bid from Chelsea.

€50m was offered by the London club but Ajax refused to let him depart in the latter hours of the transfer window.

Now ex-Ajax player Andy Van der Meyde has claimed that Chelsea only targeted Alvarez as a last resort:

“For a player, it’s not because they really have confidence in you, otherwise they would have knocked on your door sooner,” Van der Meyde claimed (via Sport Witness).

“Now they want to make a panic purchase and he wants to leave Ajax straight away. Then he must realise they just want me because they have nothing else.”
