Cheltenham Festival 2023: Pertemps Handicap Hurdle tips - Maxxum can land competitive clash
This race was won by 25/1 outsider Third Wind last year, which highlights the competitive nature of this big-field handicap.
However, there is still value at the top end of the market, where Maxxum has looked rejuvenated since passing into the hands of Gordon Elliot.
This six-year-old can be forgiven for his last performance, when he was badly hampered on the home turn, as prior to that setback he enjoyed two wins and one second place in his three previous outings.
The two successes both came in big-field handicaps at Navan and Leopardstown, so Maxxum won't be perturbed by his 20+ rivals here, nor by the Festival atmosphere. Today's jockey, Davy Russell, was on board for the first two of those three impressive outings, and Elliott was keen to book the experienced jockey for this one, perhaps explaining Maxxum's support in the market.

Lower down the betting there appears to be plenty of each-way options, especially with up to eight places being offered by some bookmakers.
Maxxum's stablemate The Bosses Oscar catches the eye after coming runner-up in this event two years ago, so he clearly knows how to negotiate the New Course obstacles.
If he can stay in touch, then the five-pound claim of jockey Ben Harvey might prove crucial coming up the hill, and with those extra places on offer, this savvy eight-year-old looks a decent punt at a double-digit price. Each-way popular punt:The Bosses Oscar
