Chiefs get protection for Patrick Mahomes in their trade for Ravens' Pro Bowl OT Orlando Brown Jr.

The 2021 NFL draft hasn't yet arrived, but the Kansas City Chiefs have filled a big hole.

As first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Chiefs are shipping their first-round pick (No. 31 overall), plus other considerations, to the Baltimore Ravens for offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr. Both clubs have confirmed the trade.

Here are the details of the trade:

Brown, who has made two straight Pro Bowls, sought permission for a trade this offseason, expressing his desire to be a left tackle, which wasn't going to happen in Baltimore with All-Pro Ronnie Stanley locked up long term.

The son of the late Orlando Brown Sr., who spent nine years in the NFL with the Ravens and Cleveland Browns, the younger Brown originally was a third-round draft pick out of Oklahoma, starting 10 of 16 games as a rookie in 2018. He blossomed in 2019 and helped replace an injured Stanley at left tackle last season, proving his worth at the position he's expected to man in Kansas City.

The Chiefs were forced to cut both of their starting tackles, Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz, this offseason because of injury concerns, age and salary. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' pass rush ate up the Chiefs' pass protection in Super Bowl LV.

Now the Chiefs have their left tackle spot addressed before next week's draft has even arrived, and they also added guards Joe Thuney and Kyle Long in free agency. And Brown now goes from protecting Lamar Jackson to doing the same for the Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes.

Brown, who turns 25 years old a week from Sunday, also figures to be in line for a contract extension, entering the final year of his four-year rookie contract.
