Chris Wilder takes swipe at Coventry City players' part in sacking amid new appointment claim
Chris Wilder took a swipe at Coventry City’s players for their part in Mark Robins’ sacking after accusing them of running around “a little bit more” knowing that their new manager was probably watching the televised match.
The Sheffield United boss saw his side take the lead twice at the CBS Arena where the Sky Blues battled back to secure a 2-2 draw against 10 men after Blades’ defender Anel Ahmedhodzic was red carded for violent conduct before half-time.
Asked for his reaction to the game, Wilder said: “Eventful. It was always going to be a tough game and I think if you look at the players and the composition of the opposition and the squad, I do believe it’s top five, top six. From a statistical point of view they have been under performing so we knew today would be a challenge.

“And we knew the challenge of somebody potentially taking over, whether they were there today or not, or in the next 24/48 hours, you know, media stuff that I believe will happen. I might be wrong but it’s a big football club they are up against and I stand by what I said about Mark (Robins), who did an incredible job.
“Maybe if they’d run around more like that before their manager might still be in a job. Whether I am being controversial about it, we knew, and maybe it’s just human nature that they would run around a little bit more today, which they did. I think the comforting thing from our point of view is we know exactly what we’re getting, game in and game out, and that’s why we’re close to top of the league.
“They started the better but we scored against the run of play. They got back into it with a cross-cum-shot, which we’re disappointed with from a defensive point of view, but they were always going to be difficult opponents, and for me it was a point gained with how the game went.”
He added: “They were chucking players on and going for it. We would have done the same. We were 2-1 up so what do we do, go Kamikaze and open the game up or sit in, which we did. We have shown we are prepared to defend by hook or by crook, but the only disappointing thing was we didn’t have anything going forward.
“We tried to hang on in there but we need to be more disciplined in light of a few incidents that went off, so I have no issue with the red card and the referee’s decision. Anel fell for the three card trick and that puts even more pressure on ourselves in a tight game when we’re down to ten against a good footballing side.
“We knew they would be open on transition. They get players forward and they flood, play some decent stuff. They are good players and a good group we were playing against. If it had been 11 v 11 it would be a difficult place to come.”
