Christian Eriksen made his Manchester United debut, but it was a result to forget for the side as a whole as they went down to 10 men and lost 1-0 to Atletico Madrid.

In the first of two friendlies over the weekend to conclude their pre-season preparations, Manchester United faced off with Atletico Madrid in Oslo. However, it led to their first defeat since Erik ten Hag took charge as manager over the summer.

A late goal from Joao Felix ensured Atletico earned the win, becoming the first side to defeat Ten Hag’s United this pre-season.

Manchester United went into the match with the following starting lineup: De Gea; Dalot, Maguire, Lindelof, Malacia; McTominay, Fred; Elanga, Fernandes, Rashford; Martial.

There were a couple of chances in quick succession for United within the opening five minutes. First, Marcus Rashford forced a save from Jan Oblak. Soon after, Anthony Martial aimed over the bar in a one-on-one chance.

As the half progressed, Atletico had some chances of their own, but were lacking the finishing touch.

It was beginning to get a little heated, with as many as five players picking up yellow cards in the first half. Among them were United midfield pair Scott McTominay and Fred.

Just like the start of the half, United ended it with a couple of chances. One saw Rashford provide Oblak with a fairly routine save after an effort from the edge of the box. Next, the same striker helped create a chance for Anthony Elanga, whose effort was also gathered by the Atletico keeper.

In the second half, both teams went out with the same lineups. But by the hour mark, Atletico made nine changes.

Manchester United debut for Christian Eriksen

Then, in the 69th minute, a significant moment came when United sent on Christian Eriksen for his club debut. He entered alongside Donny van de Beek in place of Martial and McTominay.

Eriksen featured as an attacking midfielder, prompting a reshuffle from some other players. The new recruit showed some creativity from open play and set pieces; one of his corners led to a free header for Harry Maguire, who couldn’t make the most of it.

Another United change saw Facundo Pellistri get a brief run out in place of Elanga.

Within the final 10 minutes, United went closer to breaking the deadlock, when Rashford and Pellistri were both thwarted.

Instead, though, it was Atletico who took the lead with three minutes remaining. Joao Felix fired past David De Gea into the bottom corner.

Things got worse for United when Fred received a second yellow card for a foul on Alvaro Morata and was therefore sent off moments later. It prompted Pellistri to be withdrawn for James Garner as a substitute.

It was by then too late for Manchester United to get back in the game. They will be hoping other members of their squad can get a better result against Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford on Sunday.
