Christian Eriksen says "stupid mistakes" cost Tottenham as Mauricio Pochettino's side crashed out of the Europa League to Gent at Wembley.

The second-leg began so well for Mauricio Pochettino's side, who went in front thanks to Eriksen's early effort before Harry Kane's own goal.

Dele Alli's red card proved to be a turning point and, despite Victor Wanyama's strike, Gent booked their place in the last-16 courtesy of a 3-2 aggregate victory after Jeremy Perbet poked home late on.

Spurs dominated the game for long periods but Eriksen is adamant careless errors proved to be the difference as the north Londoners came up short at the national stadium yet again.

"We are very disappointed with what we did today and over two games against Gent," he told BT Sport.

"They did not have a shot in first half but still got a goal - that made it difficult.

"When we came again in front we gave it away on a stupid mistake - we weren't good enough in our finishing."

Spurs are entitled to feet aggrieved about Gent's first goal as television replays showed the Belgian side were incorrectly awarded a corner before Kane turned the ball into his own net.

But Eriksen is convinced the blame should be laid at the players' door after they failed to make their dominance count.

"The ref was not on our side either. Even with 10 men we had chances to get the winner. We can blame the ref but we had our chances and we weren't good enough," he added.
