Manchester United look unlikely to persuade Christian Eriksen to move to Old Trafford this summer, as a decision over the Dane’s future draws ever closer.

The classy star’s return to action has been one of the feel-good stories of 2022. Having collapsed after suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, it was expected to spell the end of his top-flight career. However, Eriksen – having returned to full health and taken medical advice – was determined to play on.

Ultimately, it was Brentford who took a chance on Eriksen, handing him an initial six-month deal in January through to the end of the season.

That decision reaped benefits for all parties. Not only did Eriksen return to form, scoring once and providing four assists, his form helped the Bees finish in a highly-commendable 13th.

But with his deal expiring on June 30, Eriksen is a free agent once again – and the 30-year certainly finds himself a man in demand.

Indeed, Manchester United are among those reportedly looking at recruiting him. To that end, a report on Sunday claimed Erik ten Hag was pushing to bring the former Tottenham man to Old Trafford.

The Red Devils chased Eriksen prior to his move to Inter Milan in 2020 – and his signing is one that would make a lot of sense.

However, one man who has followed Eriksen’s career closely is Danish TV2 football editor-in-chief Carsten Werge.

However, he does not think a move to Manchester United is on for Eriksen. And instead, Werge believes the playmaker looks likely to stay at Brentford and commit to a new deal.

Sky Sports reports they have offered him a long-term deal and are now awaiting his response.

Christian Eriksen likely to reject Manchester United

Revealing what he has heard, Werge told Sky Sports: “We would not be surprised to see Christian stay at Brentford.

“He has been very good there and he looks very happy in this club with a lot of Danish people around him, including the coach Thomas Frank – who is very good.

“So I think the feeling around him is that, well, even though the money could be bigger at the other clubs that have been mentioned, I don’t think this is a question of money. It is a question about where Christian and his family feel comfortable.

“I imagine that could easily be Brentford. I think Thomas Frank is working really hard to get Christian to stay, as we have all seen he has been a very important player.

“You could see that he was enjoying playing there because he had such a big responsibility for the team. Bigger maybe than when he was playing at Tottenham. I don’t think he would go to Everton or United because they are not in a good position.”

Star may yet choose Tottenham return

Tottenham are also reportedly considering an emotional move to bring Eriksen back to the club.

He was a huge fans’ favourite over his seven seasons there before parting ways in a move to Inter Milan.

The player has made no secret of his affection for Tottenham. As a result, Werge reckons Eriksen will either choose to stay at Brentford – or return to Spurs this summer.

“He wants to stay in London, you can see that. He’s been there for many years with Tottenham. So if he had to choose between Tottenham and Brentford, it could be Tottenham because of the facilities there,” he added.

“But I don’t think the Champions League is the main point for Christian now. I think it is to enjoy playing football after what happened and why not enjoy it in a team with a lot of good friends.”

Given all he has been through, it’s little surprise to see Eriksen take the stance he has. He has thrived playing in the less-pressurised environment of Brentford and, in Frank, he has a manager who has handled his return brilliantly.

That will count for a lot when he comes to making his next choice. And as Werge states, this is a move that does not come down to ambition, more where the player is happy, where he can perform without pressure and where he can enjoy these bonus months – and hopefully years – added on to his career.

Meanwhile, Manchester United could have more joy if they pursue a deal for Christopher Nkunku with the midfielder seemingly opening the door on a potential transfer.
