When it comes to signing players mainly for commercial reasons, things can go badly wrong.

Many clubs have attempted to grow their appeal in football’s emerging markets by tailoring their transfers accordingly, only to find that a player’s commercial value isn’t matched by his worth on the pitch. When Arsenal signed South Korea captain Park Chu-young in 2011, for instance, it was widely suggested that the transfer could help them gain a foothold in the Far East and Asia.

Unfortunately the signing made little sense in terms of the team’s needs, with the man signed from Monaco proving ill-suited to the club and ending up neglected and ignored on the bench.

It’s futile to sign a player to make an impression on emerging markets only to sideline him to the point that his profile dwindles to nothing, essentially. Clubs have to strike a careful balance between commercial interests and the interests of the team.

Though Fenway Sports Group have plenty of commercial reasons to bring Christian Pulisic to Liverpool, he represents one of those rare transfers which would make as much sense on the pitch as off it. Still only 19 years of age, the little midfielder with the deft touch could be exactly what Jurgen Klopp needs.

Subject to huge hype in the USA where he is already considered a star with the men’s national team, Pulisic has spent the last few years gradually growing into his role with Borussia Dortmund. An attacking midfielder with superb dribbling skills and a burgeoning confidence in front of goal, he has scored four times in all competitions this season from 24 appearances.

The American market

For Fenway Sports Group, the idea of signing the USA’s most exciting young talent must seem like a no-brainer even if he does come with a hefty transfer fee. European football is becoming ever more popular in North America, so recruiting Pulisic could be an opportunity for Liverpool to harness the USA’s enormous financial potential.

From Jurgen Klopp’s perspective, signing Pulisic could be just as expedient. While Liverpool’s attack have earned plenty of plaudits this season – Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane have netted 50 goals between them – their midfield could still do with that last touch of creative quality.

While Pulisic’s youth means that his exact position in the middle of the park is yet to be defined, he could provide competition for Gini Wijnaldum, Adam Lallana and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain while revitalising the space behind the front three. With his low centre of gravity and ability to dribble past opponents, Pulisic could free up Salah, Mane and Firmino even further.

Considering Klopp’s ties with Dortmund, the transfer could be not only convenient but feasible. Pulisic joined the youth set-up at BVB in Klopp’s last season at the Westfalenstadion, meaning that the seeds of a professional relationship have been sown already. There’s a Philippe Coutinho-shaped hole in Liverpool’s squad as things stand and, while it would be premature to suggest that Pulisic is ready to fill it, the American prospect could be one for the future with huge promise both athletically and commercially.
