Manchester City youngster's debut lasts just one second in Wembley win

A young football’s debut is supposed to be a cherished moment. Some get their first ever shirt signed, others want it framed.

When you’re a take your first steps on the Wembley turf, it’s even more of a big thing.

But for poor old Claudio Gomes, his Manchester City bow on Sunday wasn’t one to remember. At least he won’t have to wash his top!

Blink and you might have missed it. Quite literally.

The 18-year-old was the subject of social media giggles right at the very end of Sunday’s Community Shield final with Chelsea.

Just after the board was put up for five minutes added time, Pep Guardiola decided to get him a little time with his team 2-0 up.

But sadly for the French midfielder, the ball didn’t go out of play until the very closing stages.

He ran on as most were heading for the exits and hadn’t even got into position by the time the referee blew the full-time whistle.

His second-long debut after signing from Paris Saint-Germain may have been the most short-lived and pointless ever, but they all count.

The energetic teenager is one of the big young talents in the game and City have high hopes for him.

“He has been so good, so good,” said his manager. “My opinion is that at that age you have to play. You need minutes, if not with us then with the second team.

“But it could be like what happened with Phil Foden and Brahim Diaz – he could stay with us, because from what we have seen in these days, the impression is good.”
