Luciano Becchio was on the scoresheet for Leeds

Neil Warnock's new-look Leeds cruised past Shrewsbury in the first round of the Capital One Cup as goals from Luciano Becchio, summer signings Luke Varney and David Norris, and Ross McCormack's penalty secured an easy 4-0 win.

Tony Mowbray's Middlesbrough beat Bury 2-1 at Gigg Lane. A side containing five new faces saw off their npower League One opponents thanks to goals from Marvin Emnes and debutant Emanuel Ledesma. Mark Hughes pulled one back for the hosts, who had Efe Sodje sent off in injury time.

Stale Solbakken started life as Wolves boss with an unconvincing victory after his side edged past Aldershot 7-6 on penalties after drawing 1-1 in 90 minutes at Molineux.

Steve Bruce began his reign as Hull manager in dramatic fashion as the Tigers progressed 7-6 on penalties after Rotherham held them to a 1-1 draw in normal time.

Chris Dagnall's extra-time double earned Barnsley a 4-3 win over Rochdale at Spotland, while substitute Chris Iwelumo's extra-time goal secured a 1-0 triumph for Gianfranco Zola in his first competitive game in charge of Watford against Wycombe.

Bradford needed extra time to get past Notts County 1-0 and Doncaster prevailed 4-2 on penalties over York City after drawing 1-1 at the end of extra time. Penalties were also required at Cheltenham with the home side going down 5-3 to Milton Keynes Dons after ending 120 minutes of football at 1-1.

But Sheffield United made a less than ideal start to their campaign as they crashed out to npower League Two side Burton Albion at Bramall Lane. The Blades were behind after 34 minutes and fought back to make it 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes. A goal apiece in extra time saw it go to penalties but Burton emerged the 5-4 victors.

Summer signing Ashley Hemmings scored on his debut to give Walsall a 1-0 success at home to Brentford, who had Jake Reeves sent off after 25 minutes.

Two goals each from Max Clayton and Mathias Pogba helped Crewe Alexandra to a 5-0 victory over Hartlepool at Gresty Road. Ajay Leitch-Smith was also on target for the Railwaymen.

An eighth-minute strike from Ashley Hemmings gave Walsall a 1-0 triumph over Brentford, while Matthew Robson struck after 39 minutes to see Carlisle progress at the expense of Accrington.
