CM Punk Back Surgery Delays UFC Debut Yet Again

CM Punk Back in Camp; Looking for a Fight

CM Punk‘s UFC debut has been delayed once again, this time due to back surgery.

It's been more than a year since former WWE champion Phil “CM Punk” Brooks announced his intention to make his mixed martial arts debut in the UFC Octagon. The initial plan was a lengthy period of training, making sure he was prepared to convert his years as a professional wrestler into being a competitive fighter, and then take his first fight in 2015.

A shoulder injury derailed those plans.

After healing up and continuing his training, Punk was on target for his Octagon debut at either UFC 199 or UFC 200. He even finally had an opponent following Mickey Gall‘s win over Mike Jackson at UFC Fight Night 82 over the weekend. But now, Punk and Gall will have to wait.

“My back has always bugged me,” Punk told MMAFighting.com. “Figured it was just wrestling (expletive). Turns out it was.

“It got bad enough to the point where I couldn't do anything the week before I went to train with the New Jersey Devils last month. One day I could manage, the next day I couldn't. I've been in agony for almost a month. Chiropractor, acupuncture, massage, cryotherapy … nothing worked.”

Punk on Wednesday was expected to undergo a surgery similar to the recent arthroscopic surgery that former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez recently underwent. Like Velasquez, his recovery is expected to take four-to-six weeks.

As of the time of publication, it was unclear when Punk might be ready to step into the Octagon.
