Cole warns Man Utd not to sign Tottenham star Kane as he makes two-year prediction
Andy Cole has warned Man Utd that signing Tottenham striker Harry Kane would be “short-term solution again” from the club.
The Red Devils have made signing a new centre-forward their top priority in the summer transfer window with the club still looking to replace Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo left Man Utd at the end of November following a controversial interview with Piers Morgan and Erik ten Hag is looking for someone to take the goalscoring burden away from Marcus Rashford.
Wout Weghorst was brought in on loan until the end of the season in January but now Man Utd will sign a permanent solution to their issue.
And Kane is reportedly their main target with a report last month claiming Ten Hag is ‘sold’ on the idea of bringing the England international to Old Trafford.
But former Man Utd striker Cole reckons the Red Devils will be looking to replace him in two years if they bring Kane to the club in the summer.
Cole told William Hill: “Manchester United can’t go with a short-term solution again. They can’t go and spend £80 million or £100 million on Harry Kane.
“In two years’ time they’ll turn round and say to themselves, ‘he’s 32, we need to get ourselves another striker’. They can’t afford to find themselves in that position again.
“When you look at the recognised strikers that Manchester United have had, you look at the likes of Robin van Persie, but the crazy thing is that he only stayed for two years, and ever since then it has just been one after another for two years.
“A football club like Manchester United cannot just keep having different strikers for two years at a time, it’s ridiculous.
“They know now that they have to sign someone who is going to give them five years.”
Kane only has a year left on his contract at Tottenham but Shearer thinks he will agree to stay and see out his career in north London.
“I think because of the love he has for Tottenham and that he’s been there for tough times, I just see him seeing his career out there,” Shearer told the BBC’s Football Focus.
“I get the accusation that he hasn’t won a trophy but those goals and those records he has set are his trophies. That’s why I see him staying at Tottenham.”
