Colts re-sign RB Michael, OL Mewhort

While the Indianapolis Colts' leading rusher from last year, Frank Gore, remains a free agent, the team is bringing back running back Christine Michael, who missed all of 2017 due to injury.

A second-round pick by the Seahawks in 2013, Michael bounced to the Dallas Cowboys and back to Seattle before joining the Green Bay Packers in 2016 and signing with Indianapolis last offseason. His 2017 campaign ended two weeks after he signed with the Colts when he went down in a heap during practice, though the specific injury remains unspecified.

The 27-year-old has 1,080 rushing yards (4.3 average) and seven scores in 37 career games (nine starts).

The Colts' backfield also includes Marlon Mack, Matt Jones and Josh Ferguson. Mack's 358 rushing yards ranked second on the club in 2017. Indianapolis also owns the No. 6 pick in the upcoming draft.

Also Wednesday, the Colts retained offensive guard Jack Mewhort, who agreed to a one-year deal and returns for his fifth season in Indianapolis. Per NFL Network, the deal is worth $1.5 million with an additional $1.5 million available via incentives.

The Colts drafted Mewhort in the second round in 2014.

Offensive lineman Matt Slauson, formerly of the Los Angeles Chargers, signed with the Colts on Tuesday.

Slauson, 32, is likely to play guard with Ryan Kelly at center, but the versatile veteran has started at three positions on the offensive line. He started seven games at guard last season (16 at center in 2016) for the Chargers before a season-ending biceps injury.

Slauson rejoins offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni, who spent the last two seasons as the Chargers' wide receivers coach.

Mewhort, 26, missed 11 games last season after a season-ending knee injury and battled injuries in 2016.

The Colts allowed an NFL-high 56 sacks last season and set the front five as a top priority this offseason.

Mewhort tweeted Wednesday, "Thank you for all the love and support. Indy is my home and I am beyond grateful to the @Colts organization for sticking by me. I can't wait to get back to work and see what the future holds #ColtsNation"
