Gloucester City manager Mike Cook saw both good and bad signs in his side’s performance in the 2-0 loss to Bracknell Town on Saturday afternoon.

It was yet another game has gone by where City were unable to make good on their chances, and Cook made that very clear.

“I thought we played well in patches, we had the most chances again and couldn’t put them away," he said.

“It comes back to bite you when you don’t put those chances away, pleased in the way that we got possession up the park, but we’re not putting those chances away at the moment.”

Bracknell made the most of their chances with two goals in the second half through Max Herbert and Sebastian Bowerman to hand City their second loss in the league.

On the other hand, it seems as if unless Joe Hanks is spearheading the attack or scoring, nobody else is able to produce that finishing touch for the Tigers.

A dry spell in front of goal has surely got to be affecting the confidence of some attackers at the club, who desperately need a goal to get themselves going for the season.

This is something that Cook knows all too well, just requiring someone else to step up to the plate.

Cook said: “It’s affecting us massively; I thought Jay did okay when he came on and put himself out quite a lot.

“Their goalkeeper played well today, they defended well and got a few blocks in the box.

“Saying that, I think we had nine opportunities that you’d look to score at least one or two of those so I’m disappointed.”

Time is running out for City to get their other strikers in order, as after 16 league matches Joe Hanks has scored 48 per cent of their goals with 12.

The only other player with more than two league goals is Brandon Smalley who has six, and all the goals have been shared between a mere seven players.

A new signing could be just what Cook needs to help Hanks out in attack, and make sure City’s promotion push doesn't falter.

"I think we probably need a bit of fresh blood just to give people a bit of a gee up, that doesn’t do any harm," Cook said.

“Ideally we need a big man and someone who can hold it up and score a few goals, and they are not easy to come by.

“All in all, I wasn’t dissatisfied with the effort and playing it around, but we’ve just got to put the ball in the back of the net or else this is what happens, we pay the price.”

Ahead of the next fixture against Walton & Hersham, it’s clear City have one area of improvement.

With goals at the forefront of Cook’s mind, he knows that eventually they will come, it is just a matter of time.

He said: “We’ve just got to keep working in training because KP can’t keep missing all the time, he’s going to get a game where he starts scoring.

“I thought that was going to be today with the one that he knocked across the goalkeeper and it hit the post.

“Nobody can moan if they play upfront for us about not having any chances, at the moment I’m feeling down about things, but we’ll have to bounce back!”
