Varun Chakravarthy has played just three T20Is for India so far, all in the series against Sri Lanka in July. Despite that, he has been touted to be Virat Kohli’s trump or surprise card in the T20 World Cup, for which he has been named in the main 15-man squad. It is the mystery of Varun Chakravarthy which has bamboozled batsmen and selectors.

The Kolkata Knight Riders spinner was the team’s leading wicket-taker in IPL 2020, in the UAE, and earned his place for his international debut. He picked 2 wickets in 3 matches but bowled at a brilliant economy of 5.30.

Reliving the phase of his maiden India tour, Varun Chakravarthy talked about the excitement around his debut match.

“The day after I made my debut, I could not sleep. It was surreal, I could not get over it. Had butterflies in my stomach, I could not sleep the day before my debut as well,” the spinner told Aakash Chopra on his YouTube channel.

He said that the feeling of playing for a franchise in the IPL is largely different from playing for India.

“Compared to IPL, the feel is definitely different when representing the country. I could sense I had to play with responsibility,” he said.

There was a lot of pressure from home when I decided to start playing again: Varun Chakravarthy

Varun Chakravarthy recalled his unbelievable journey from being an architect, and looking for employment in the movie industry, to a handsome IPL deal with Punjab and then KKR, and now finally to being part of India’s World Cup squad.

“I did my architecture course from 2007-12, then worked at a firm for 2 years and then started my own firm. After that, I felt like doing something different. I spent a year in the movie industry like acting and direction and all that. All of that did not work for me, then I thought of playing cricket again. There was a lot of pressure from home when I decided to start playing cricket again,” the 30-year-old revisited his journey.

He would soon be seen playing for KKR during the second half of the IPL 2021 in the UAE. Eoin Morgan’s team is sitting at the 7th position with just 2 wins in 7 matches in the first half of the tournament.
