The Farnese Vini-Selle Italia rider had admitted to working closely with Ferrari between 2005 and 2009, before the Italian physicist and cycling coach had been handed a lifetime ban from professional sport following doping allegations.

Pozzato maintains he had only sought advice about training from Ferrari, but the scandal still forced him to miss this summer's Olympic Games in London while he waited for a tribunal date.

Pozzato, who was also fined 2,000 euros, will have to sit out until September 18, but will be able to return to the saddle for the final races of the season.

He reacted to the sanctions by tweeting, "What a farce."

In June this year, Ferrari had opted not to contest charges brought by the US Anti-Doping Authority against him for the possession, administration and trafficking of prohibited substances.
