Conor McGregor’s coach hints at UFC star’s comeback with Michael Jordan comparison

Conor McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh has hinted that the Irishman will return to the UFC again – only a day after his shock retirement announcement.

McGregor explained that he was “bored of the game” and that the prospect of fighting in an empty arena provided “no buzz”. However, the two-weight world champion has twice already u-turned on similar statements.

When asked about McGregor’s decision, Kavanagh compared him to six-time NBA champions Michael Jordan, who retired in 1993 at the peak of his career before returning to the sport two years later.

“At age 31 Jordan abruptly retired from basketball before the 1993–94 NBA season,” Kavanagh tweeted.

“He returned to the Bulls in March 1995 and led them to three additional championships in 1996, 1997, and 1998, as well as a then-record 72 regular-season wins in the 1995–96 NBA season.”

McGregor had initially planned to fight three times in 2020 before the coronavirus outbreak, having defeated Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone in just 40 seconds in January.

McGregor made the surprise announcement moments after the conclusion of Saturday’s UFC 250 show in Las Vegas and tweeted: ”Hey guys I’ve decided to retire from fighting. Thank you all for the amazing memories! What a ride it’s been!

“Here is a picture of myself and my mother in Las Vegas post one of my world title wins! Pick the home of your dreams Mags I love you! Whatever you desire it’s yours.”
