Tottenham Hotspur are one of four clubs competing for the signature of Sporting CP wing-back Pedro Porro, according to a report.

Porro recently emerged onto Tottenham’s radar after playing against them in the Champions League. The wing-back signed for Sporting on a permanent basis this summer after a couple of seasons on loan from Manchester City.

Although he never got the chance to make his Premier League debut with his former club, he could be brought back to England by Tottenham.

Antonio Conte has not been able to find a right-back he trusts in his current squad. Emerson Royal, Matt Doherty and Djed Spence are all falling below the required standard.

Therefore, Tottenham have been tipped to go into the transfer market in order to find a new first-choice in the position. Denzel Dumfries of Inter Milan would be one option, but his price tag is going up and competition is fierce. Thus, they need to weigh up alternatives in case he is out of reach.

Last month, links with Porro began to emerge. Now, more sources are adding their own weight to the idea of Spurs signing the Spaniard.

According to Record, Tottenham are one of Porro’s main suitors. In fact, Conte has carried out “detailed observations” regarding the 23-year-old, whom he could now encourage his club to bid for.

Porro’s representatives will hold talks with Sporting in January over the topic of a transfer. However, under contract until 2025, he may have to wait until the end of the season before he can leave.

And even then, it might not necessarily be to Tottenham. The report from Record has also put Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus into contention for Porro’s signature.

Plenty of options for Pedro Porro

Real Madrid have Dani Carvajal and Alvaro Odriozola at right-back. But the former is now in his thirties and the latter is attracting interest from elsewhere; for instance, he could link up with ex-Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho at Roma.

Barcelona are another contender to take Porro back to La Liga, where he previously played for the likes of Girona and Real Valladolid. They took Hector Bellerin from Arsenal in the summer, but only on a short-term deal.

Alternatively, Porro could test himself in a completely different league by signing for Serie A side Juventus. Their current situation is quite turbulent, as Fabio Paratici is all too aware, but they could do with more depth in the full-back areas, with Danilo and Mattia De Sciglio both currently injured.

It remains to be seen where Porro will end up. Along with Spurs, Barcelona’s need might be the greatest. But Tottenham might have a decent chance of signing him, as long as Conte stays in charge.

To get their man, Spurs would have to come up with a bid close to the value of Porro’s €45million release clause. As things stand, he could cost them in the region of £38.8million.

Tottenham hoping for right-back solution

With an investment of that magnitude, Tottenham would be hoping to solve their right-back issues once and for all. A player of such a value should give them more guarantees.

Big-money deals for the likes of Emerson and Spence have not paid off yet. But Porro could be the missing piece of Conte’s puzzle, providing more balance to the Tottenham lineup.

In 89 appearances for Sporting, Porro has provided nine goals and 16 assists. This season, there have been seven assists – but no goals – from his 17 appearances in all competitions.

Contrastingly, Emerson has only given one assist from 18 games, while neither Doherty or Spence have registered a goal contribution from 11 and four appearances respectively.

If he can replicate his Sporting form, Porro would be an upgrade on all three of them. He can aim high with the way things have been going, so Tottenham will hope to retain their appeal as a destination.
