Conte sack? Tottenham ‘discuss interim manager’ appointment after ‘astonishing attack’ – ‘it’s over’
Antonio Conte’s spell in charge of Tottenham Hotspur is reportedly ‘coming to an end’ as they are ‘discussing’ appointing an interim manager.
The Italian head coach was left raging after Spurs surrendered a two-goal lead against Southampton on Saturday afternoon.
Tottenham were 3-1 in front but James Ward-Prowse’s stoppage-time penalty earned the Saints a valuable point.
Conte was unwilling to bite his lip when speaking to reporters after the final whistle. He suggested that he “sees selfish players” in his squad.
“We are not a team. We are eleven players that go into the pitch. I see selfish players, players that don’t want to help each other and don’t put their heart,” Conte said.
“Until now I try to hide the situation but now, not anymore”.
“Here’s always the same, every season. The club has the responsibility for the transfer market, the coach has responsibility. But the players, where are the players? I see only 11 players that play for themselves!”.
He added: “They are used to it here at Tottenham. They don’t play for something important. They don’t want to play under pressure, or under stress. It is easy this way!
“Tottenham story’s this for 20 years, there’s the owner but they never won something. Why?”.
Football Insider are now reporting that ‘Tottenham are discussing appointing Ryan Mason as interim manager’.
The report adds that ‘Conte’s reign as Tottenham manager is coming to an end – and that was the case even before his astonishing attack on the club and players’.
Daniel Levy and co. are ‘discussing whether to end Conte’s reign during the international break’. A source has told Football Insider that “it’s over” for the ex-Chelsea boss as “there’s surely no way he can survive this”.
Giving 31-year-old Mason the manager’s job until the summer is ‘one option’. This would be a popular choice within the Spurs camp as he is ‘close to Harry Kane and is respected in the dressing room’. He has also ‘long been regarded by the club as a future Tottenham manager’.
The report notes that Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Tuchel and Roberto De Zerbi are ‘alternatives’. Though it is unlikely that any of these would be appointed before the summer.
Ex-Spurs man Jamie O’Hara thinks Conte is “begging” to be sacked by Levy.
“I can’t get behind a manager slaughtering his team when an international break is coming up and he’s basically saying to Levy ‘I beg you to sack me’,” O’Hara told talkSPORT.
“He rested Harry Kane in an FA Cup game, we lost that game, the performance was pathetic. He dug the players out after that and I have no problem with that because it was pathetic.
“Then you go and lose against AC Milan, another pathetic performance, but they are his tactics as well. Yes the players haven’t been good enough, they haven’t stepped up and some have gone missing but he’s to blame as well, these are his tactics and it’s diabolical football to watch.”
