Tottenham head coach Antonio Conte will be ‘waiting for a call’ from Real Madrid should Carlo Ancelotti leave, according to reports in Spain.

Conte replaced Nuno Espirito Santo as Tottenham boss in November 2021 and led the north Londoners to a top-four finish in his first season.

Despite a successful 2021-22 campaign, Conte’s future at the club has always been cast in a little bit of doubt.

The Italian has often complained about his squad, lack of funds and fixture congestion, giving the vibe that he is willing to resign on any given day.

However, more than a year on, Conte is still at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and has a big job on his hands.

Spurs are currently three points off the Champions League places, though fourth-placed Manchester United have a game in hand and currently look a lot better.

While a cloud hangs over the white side of north London with Conte’s contract up in the summer, a report has now said he wants the Real Madrid job.

‘Madrid legend’ Carlo Ancelotti’s contract expires in 18 months with his long-term future uncertain, so Conte is a possible option to replace him, according to Defensa Central.

The report states that Conte ‘wants to take a big leap in his career and finally reach the Madrid entity’.

These are ‘just rumours’ the report emphasises, though Conte is ‘waiting for a call’.

Spurs thought they were going to complete the signing of Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon this week, however, the deal is now off, as per David Ornstein, after the Portuguese club altered their demands.

Summer signing Djed Spence – who has not started a game all season – was expected to leave on loan, but might stay if Porro does not join.

Conte has regularly picked Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty over the 22-year-old, who missed out on the matchday squad again for Saturday’s FA Cup fourth-round win at Preston.

A number of Premier League clubs are interested in securing the services of Spence on loan but Tottenham are reluctant to allow an option-to-buy clause to be included in any deal.

Cristian Stellini, Tottenham’s assistant manager, insisted on Friday a lack of consistency in training has resulted in the defender being restricted to only six appearances this season.

“Being consistent without playing so many times is not easy but being consistent in the training is really important for a type of player like Djed,” Stellini said.

“This is the area where he can improve a lot. He improved since he is here and he had great improvement but he has to follow like everyone, like Bryan Gil, like Pape Sarr.

“They improve but the season is going on. If you don’t have many chances to play, maybe you need to be consistent in the training.

“There are also hierarchies in the team so we have to respect some hierarchies.

“It is not easy when you have a number of players, with more players in the rotation than you can use. In that moment, if you want to improve we have young players that go on loan.

“But I repeat I am not the right person to speak (about transfers). I speak in general about all the players, not just Djed Spence.”
