Carlos Corberan admitted his frustration at Huddersfield Town losing the play-off final, but had to “accept” two penalty calls not going their way.

Huddersfield were denied a Premier League return at the final hurdle as Nottingham Forest won the play-off final 1-0. An own goal from Levi Colwill proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Corberan’s side had finished above Forest in the regular season. However, it is their opponents who will be in the 2022-23 Premier League, whereas they will remain in the Championship.

It has still been a positive season according to Corberan; after all, Huddersfield finished 20th in the previous campaign. They have made progress but not quite enough for a top-flight return.

However, he didn’t feel there was much difference between the two sides at Wembley, where Forest were responsible for the only two shots on target of the 90 minutes.

Corberan told BBC Radio Leeds: “[It] was a very balanced game. Both teams were not able to create enough chances.

“We were more aggressive in the second half and attacked more. In the first half we counter-attacked more. They score a half-chance, and we couldn’t do that.”

Huddersfield may have felt aggrieved due to two penalty appeals that didn’t go in their favour. First, Harry Toffolo went down from a possible clip by Jack Colback, and second, Lewis O’Brien was floored under a challenge by Max Lowe.

However, despite the use of VAR for the play-off final, neither was awarded. Yet Corberan felt the outcomes could have been different, even if he won’t dwell too much.

Corberan can’t criticise players or decisions

He explained: “The players felt that they would have finished the actions if it wasn’t a foul, because both had clear advantages to finish the attacks.

“You have the referee and VAR. We were close to finishing the attacks and I can only accept the decisions.

“When I can’t change the consequences of the actions, I try to forget it.

“I have frustration with the result, but I cannot criticise my players. They competed really well. The determination was clear to go for the game. I am proud of the year they have done.

“I am sorry for the fans that we couldn’t achieve the result today. They supported us a lot.”

Those fans will be cheering on Huddersfield in the second tier again next season. Yet going this far will give them optimism for the future.
