Halifax half-back Cory Aston will return to fellow Championship club Sheffield Eagles on an initial three-week loan deal.

The 27-year-old came through the ranks at Sheffield, making his first team debut for the club in 2013.

Aston made 67 appearances for the Eagles before signing a two-year deal with Super League club Leeds, who paid a fee for the playmaker.

A move to Castleford followed a year later and during that season, Aston returned to Sheffield on loan as he helped the club fight off relegation.

Now with high-flying Championship club Halifax, Aston returns to the Steel City for a third spell.

Aston will play under his dad Mark again, who is the coach of the Eagles.

Sheffield boss delighted to welcome Cory Aston back

Eagles boss Mark Aston said: “We’re very happy to be bringing Cory back to the club.

“We know his qualities on the field and it’ll be great for him, on a personal note, to get to play in his home city in front of our loyal supporters at the OLP.

“He’ll be relishing the opportunity and he’ll add to our style of play, just as Tom Holmes and QLT have.”

Sheffield are currently seventh in the Championship table, having won seven from 13 games so far in 2022.

Aston will be available for Sheffield’s upcoming fixtures against Bradford, Leigh and London Broncos.

The Eagles head into this Sunday’s Championship clash with Bradford on the back of a 31-18 win over Newcastle Thunder at Kingston Park.

Sheffield have 13 games left of the season as they look to secure a spot in the play-offs.

Meanwhile, Featherstone occupy top spot in the Championship. Rovers sit just one point above 1895 Cup holders Leigh, with the two teams meeting in Monday night Rugby League, live on Premier Sports.
