Hampshire cemented their status as County Championship title contenders with an emphatic victory over Somerset. Somerset's sudden capitulation left Hampshire needing just one run to win in their second innings. A devastating spell of 6 for 27 from Hampshire seamer Keith Barker turned the game decisively in their favour.
Hampshire 280 (Donald 57, Overton 4-57, Siddle 4-80) and 1 for 0 beat Somerset 211 (Abbott 3-60) and 69 (Barker 6-27) by 10 wickets
Warwickshire up against it
Meanwhile at Headingley Yorkshire are in the driving seat against Warwickshire after the hosts built a big first innings lead. Adam Lyth took his second-day century to 145 and Yorkshire scrapped to 449 all out for a 205-run first innings lead. A new ball burst from Jordan Thompson then left the defending champions on the ropes at 57 for 3 at stumps on day three.
Warwickshire 244 and 57 for 3 (Thompson 3-19) trail Yorkshire 449 (Lyth 145, Brook 82, Revis 53*, McAndrew 4-111) by 148 runs
Northants hang on
Northamptonshire put up stubborn resistance thanks to 70-odd scores from Ricardo Vasconcelos and Luke Procter but are still some way off avaoiding the follow-on. Northants will have some hope of saving the game on day four but victory appears out of the question. Kent will need to be more incisive with the ball on the final day to clinch victory.
Northamptonshire 347 for 7 (Procter 76, Vasconcelos 71) trail Kent 519 for 9 declared by 172 runs.
Harmer bamboozles Lancashire
A five-fer from South African spinner Simon Harmer left Lancashire hanging on by a thread in their County Championship Division One match against Essex. Essex need just one wicket to clinch victory having knocked over Lancashire cheaply in the first innings and but for the resistance of Dane Vilas might have taken the win on day three. Lancashire lost five wickets in a chaotic final hour of play including that of Vilas, who was trapped leg before by compatriot Harmer. With a bit of rain around Lancashire may yet earn the luckiest of reprieves.
Lancashire 103 (S Cook 4-18) and 213 for 9 (Vilas 62, Harmer 5-85) trail Essex 391 by 75 runs.
