County to host Portsmouth after missing out on Premier League sides in cup draw
NEWPORT County AFC will host Portsmouth at Rodney Parade in round two of the Carabao Cup.
The Exiles' reward for their 3-2 upset against Luton of the Championship is a clash against League One Pompey, who hunt a Welsh double after they stunned Cardiff 3-0 in the capital.
James Rowberry's side will have home advantage for the tie on August 23, 24 or 25, most likely Tuesday, August 23 given it won't be a television pick.
County didn't get one of the Premier League clubs in the regionalised draw but will hope to get through for the possibility of facing one of the big guns that are playing European football in the third round.
The disappointment at missing out on a lucrative tie - with gate receipts shared - is mixed with relief at avoiding a long trip for the game that is in between a home League Two encounter with Tranmere and an away clash at Harrogate.
The Exiles last played Pompey in the 2016/17 season when they lost 3-2 at Rodney Parade after leading 2-0 then 2-1 at Fratton Park, a defeat followed by the remarkable run in the Great Escape.
