County team news: Hashim Amla captains much-changed Surrey, who include Sean Abbott
Surrey will be lead by Hashim Amla against Gloucestershire tomorrow in a side showing at least six changes from the draw against Middlesex, including a debut for Australia’s Sean Abbott.
Amla steps up as captain in the absence of Rory Burns who is in the England squad to face New Zealand. So is Ollie Pope, although Ben Foakes has been ruled out with injury.
That leaves three holes in the top six, which are to be filled by Ryan Patel, Laurie Evans and Will Jacks, with Jamie Smith taking the wicketkeeping gloves from Foakes.
Among the bowlers, Kemar Roach’s successful stint with the club has ended, while Reece Topley and Jordan Clark are rested (the latter as a precaution due to a slight hamstring issue).
That sees Australian international Abbott come in, likely at No7, and Jamie Overton recalled. With the match played on a used pitch, the final spot will likely go to spinner Daniel Moriarty but seamer Matt Dunn, who is one of a number of out of contract players at the club, is also in the squad.
Ben Geddes, a 19-year-old batter who recently signed his first deal at the club, is also in the squad, but Surrey are still without Jason Roy and the Curran brothers as the ECB-contracted trio rest after the Indian Premier League.
Middlesex, meanwhile, have recalled Stevie Eskinazi to a 15-man squad to travel to Leicestershire. Eskinazi, who is out of contract at the end of the season, captained the side for the first two games of the season, but has been out of favour since the arrival of skipper Peter Handscomb.
Eskinazi and Max Holden are recalled, while opener Jack Davies is dropped. Luke Hollman, Thilan Walallawita and James Harris are also included alongside those who drew with Surrey.
