Coventry City candidate Ruud van Nistelrooy has outlined his next step after Man Utd exit
Ruud van Nistelrooy has made it crystal clear that he intends to become a number one again having only accepted an assistant manager’s job at Manchester United.
The ex-United and Real Madrid player has been linked with the vacancy at Coventry City. Sky Blues owner Doug King is expected to finalise an appointment imminently after opting to sack long-time boss Mark Robins recently.
In addition to van Nistelrooy, Frank Lampard and Lee Carsley – who is about to finish a spell as England’s interim manager – are also said to be in contention. King says Coventry have received ‘a huge amount of CVs from high-quality people’.

Van Nistelrooy put his managerial career on hold in the summer to return to Old Trafford as Erik ten Hag’s assistant but has now been let go following the appointment of Ruben Amorim. The legendary Dutch centre-forward has no desire to play second fiddle elsewhere and is expected to branch out on his own again.

During his recent four-game spell managing United on an interim basis van Nistelrooy presided over three victories and a draw. The 48-year-old’s only permanent managerial job to date came at PSV Eindhoven, where he finished second in the 2022/23 Eredivisie and won two cups.
Speaking before his final United game, a 3-0 win over Leicester City, van Nistelrooy said: “I thought this through well when I made the decision to come to Manchester United as an assistant manager or assistant coach.
“I thought that through and I knew that coming to Manchester United was for me a special occasion where I felt I wanted to be part of this journey with the club in also an assistant role. I had clear ambitions to manage, I made the decision to sign a two-year deal as an assistant and I’m still in that frame of mind to be fair, to stay in that capacity.”
