Coventry City next manager search as 'shrewd operator' backed amid 'shiny new toy' links
Darragh MacAnthony believes Coventry City will still be a Championship “force” this season despite the turmoil of Mark Robins’ sacking after years of stability and upward trajectory.
The outspoken Peterborough United owner and chairman believes Sky Blues chief Doug King will “get it right” with the club despite getting rid of “one of the best managers” in the country over the last seven years.
Asked about the decision by fellow club owner King to sack Robins in the first place, MacAnthony said on his latest edition of his Hard Truth: Inside the Football Industry podcast: “I don’t know enough about it. I can’t be too judgemental. I respect Coventry and I respect their owner and director of football. I have a lot of respect for Mark Robins. I don’t know, I don’t know what the conversations were.

“I know they haven’t started the season well, I know they spent money and there was expectation in the summer, and when you have expectations, a bit like last year when they spent money, they started slowly and then caught up.
“They obviously want promotion, to be there or thereabouts. I read that some of the fans said he looked tired, he looked jaded, he’d been there so long.”
He added: “It’s one of them, but I don’t know who they are going for. I read maybe the Wycombe manager (Matt Bloomfield), a shiny new toy who is doing well.”
MacAnthony, however, believes City have a terrific squad, saying: “I still think Coventry will be a force. I look at their squad, I look at their attacking talent and I think they are far too good to be where they are. Mark Robins has been one of the best managers over the last seven years but again, it’s not my place to criticise ownership because I have been there and not wanting to lose a manager and it’s tough.
“It’s the Coventry owner’s first sacking. Let’s see how it all pans out, who they bring in and how that works out with the squad and players that they have got.”
And finally, he had a message for Sky Blues supporters.
“Coventry fans, don’t dump on your owner too much because he has been good for you since he has gone in there, so give him a bit of grace and a bit of time. He’s a pretty shrewd operator and I think he will get it right.”
