Coventry City's 'statement performance' as new boss expected to take watching brief v Sheffield Utd
Speculation continues as to who Coventry City’s new head coach is going to be, and the one thing we can say for certain is that whoever it is will be almost guaranteed to be taking a watching brief when the Sky Blues entertain Sheffield United at the CBS Arena on Saturday lunchtime.
One unsubstantiated report has suggested that Frank Lampard has agreed to become Mark Robins’ successor and that an announcement will be made after tomorrow’s match. CoventryLive understands that no formal press conference, other than Rhys Carr’s post-match briefing, is planned at this stage, and it’s unlikely that the club would make an announcement in the immediate aftermath of a game.
But what we can safely assume is that whoever is in the frame for the vacant post will be taking a keen interest in the fixture, most likely from the comfort of their own living room via Sky Sports rather than attempting to go unnoticed at the stadium.

As for the players, they are keen to pick up from where they left off from their come-back second half display at leaders Sunderland last time out and put on a good show for themselves, the fans and interim boss Rhys Carr as well as Robins’ remaining coaching team, who face an uncertain future given that a new head coach is likely to want to bring in his own backroom staff.
The players are also keen to get a result to ensure that whoever comes in, arrives with the club in a good place, as well as showing him that they’ve got plenty of quality.
“Yeah, definitely,” said Joel Latibeaudiere. “These are big games and this could be an opportunity to put in a statement performance, and that’s what we want to give.”
As for showing the new man what they’re all about, taking into account the fact that he’s almost certainly likely to be watching the televised game, the defender said: “Yes, one hundred percent. Obviously we want to play well in every game but there is that element and who knows, maybe we’ll find out who it is on Saturday.”
Latibeaudiere has also praised the existing coaching staff for putting the players and the club before themselves.
“The coaches have been doing a great job,” said the Jamaican who has been away on international duty.
“I did speak to one or two of the players while I was away and they said the level of training has been really good. It’s not easy for the coaches to be able to do that because they have come in new with the gaffer (Mark Robins) and I can imagine it’s been very tough on them, especially not knowing who is going to come in and what’s going on.
“So they have been really good with the boys, putting their feelings to one side and getting us prepared for the games, and that’s definitely earned a lot of respect in the changing room.”
