Tim Bresnan led the charge for England on his final appearance before being sent for treatment on a nagging elbow injury, taking four for 45 as the hosts made 226 all out.
Suresh Raina prevented the Indian innings from disaster, his 83 vital in their recovery from 49 for four. But the tourists can also count themselves as culpable, putting down a total of five catches in the innings, including two tough ones in three balls off Raina.
Despite his impending meeting with a specialist, Bresnan proved he was still fit enough to cause India problems when he sent back Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli with successive balls in the fourth over.
Sharma was first to go for four, nicking a swinging delivery to second slip, where James Tredwell held a smart catch. The dangerous Kohli bagged a golden duck next up, following a wider one from Bresnan and offering James Tredwell a second catch. The Kent captain clung on again, but only after a series of fumbles.
Yuvraj Singh survived the hat-trick ball but was soon gone for nought, squared up by Steven Finn and floating a catch to Eoin Morgan at point. India were one short of 50 when Gautam Gambhir's luck ran out, Tredwell the bowler as he was caught by the diving Ian Bell for 24.
Raina and Mahendra Singh Dhoni set about rebuilding the innings and added 30 - including a straight six from Raina - before Finn returned to trap the home captain lbw for 15.
England put down Raina twice in the space of three balls, on 61 and 63, Alastair Cook diving at square leg and Tredwell getting finger tips to a return chance. But Tredwell continued his memorable series by breaking the 78-run partnership when a Ravindra Jadeja mis-hit looped into Bell's hands.
Raina was now playing a lone hand and reached 83 before pulling Chris Woakes straight to Bell at mid-wicket. That left India 177 for seven, with 8.2 overs left and the tail did a fine job of massaging the total.
Ravichandran Ashwin (19) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (31) both had fun towards the end, which came when Bresnan took the last two wickets in the final over.
