The match looked set for a tight finish with the Royals needing ten to win off the final over but Hodge smashed Darren Sammy’s first ball over backward square leg before launching the same bowler for another maximum over mid-on to win the game and bring up his half century off just 29 balls.

The Sunrisers batted first and got off to a bad start, losing both Parthiv Patel and Hanuma Vihari with just three runs on the board.

Shikhar Dhawan, Cameron White and Sammy steadied the ship to post a competitive 132 from their 20 overs and they looked on target for victory with the Royals reeling at 57-5.

But they did not bargain for Brad Hodge who took the match by the scruff of the neck to send them through in the most dramatic fashion.

Friday’s match winner will play the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL final.
