Resuming on 160 for four, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow continued England's slow progress in the first Investec Test before the former glanced one down the leg side from Tim Southee, with BJ Watling taking the catch.

Southee struck again with his next delivery, a late inswinger trapping Matt Prior lbw, before Neil Wagner dismissed Stuart Broad (lbw) and Graeme Swann (caught behind), leaving the hosts on 201 for eight.
