Rankin has played 52 limited-overs matches for the Irish, with his most recent appearance coming in last September's World Twenty20, but Monday's call-up ties him to England for at least four years.
The 6ft 7in fast bowler joined an under-strength side, captained by fellow Ireland convert Eoin Morgan, which included just four of the side beaten in Sunday's Champions Trophy final against India.
None of England's Test stars were included, meaning regular Twenty20 skipper Stuart Broad sat out, as they instead begin preparations for the Ashes.
Morgan won the toss and opted to send in a New Zealand side that gave Ian Butler, Tom Latham and Ronnie Hira their first international matches of the tour.
