Ben Cutting and Chris Hartley led an Australian recovery from 66 for six as they posted 71 runs in just 45 balls to set 137 but Chennai dismantled that target with ease with openers Michael Hussey and Murali Vijay immediately racking up the runs.

And although Cutting dimissed Vijay, Chennai marched towards victory and sealed it inside 16 overs when Mahendra Singh Dhoni smashed one for six over long off.

In Saturday’s earlier match, Titans also cantered to an eight-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad.

A Parthiv Patel 26 and Shikhar Dhawan’s 37 saw the Sunrisers make a rapid start to their innings having been put in to bat.

However, David Wiese managed to restrict the Sunrisers to 145 for seven after that impressive start as a middle order collapse stymied their momentum.

Skipper Henry Davids made 64 off 42 balls before Jacques Rudolph (49 not out) saw out the chase to improve his side’s chances of progressing from their group.
