The White Rose added 89 runs for their last three wickets this morning, all-rounder Adil Rashid making 110 not out for back-to-back first-class centuries. That left them 279 ahead on 407 all out and they then left Warwickshire wobbling on nine for three in just five overs before the break.
Tim Bresnan, a late arrival to this match from the England camp, claimed two wickets, with Ryan Sidebottom taking the other.
Middlesex also appear set fair against Somerset at Taunton.
The Cidermen were 208 for seven following on at the interval, a lead of only 13. Tim Murtagh's fifth wicket of the innings was the key one of Peter Trego for 82, but England's Jos Buttler remains in position on 58no.
At Trent Bridge, Nottinghamshire were on 78 for two against Surrey, ahead by 145.
Nightwatchman Luke Fletcher made 26 before being dismissed by Stuart Meaker and he was the only wicket of a slow morning. Australia opener Ed Cowan stood firm on 17no from 78 balls.
Derbyshire were fighting hard to stay in the game against visiting Sussex at the County Ground.
Michael Yardy, 121no overnight, reached 153 to take Sussex to 401 all out - an innings in which Mark Footitt managed six for 120.
Derbyshire then reached 39 for one by lunch - 139 behind - with Billy Godleman the man out.
